COQ AU VIN?

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

I think I will finally be sleeping well tonight.

P.S. The cousins and I grilled some flank steak sandwiches on the beach at Hanalei Bay today. I couldn’t decide which one of these photos I liked better, so I’m going to show you both:

YOUNG JAZZ

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

John Nolan, a student in the middle school workshop, and Chris Marrone, an intern instructor, participate in the Summer Jazz Workshops ’08 at UCONN Stamford. The workshops are sponsored by the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic.

READ THE STORY: HERE

These young musicians, mostly middle and high school students, were selected to participate in an intensive two week workshop. They were good, really good! And it’s nice to see them taking two weeks out of the summer to improve their skills. No wasted youth here.

WHERE ‘YAT, BRAH?

Judy Mikesell/Special to theadvocatephotos.com

Before I left for vacation I had grand plans to go out and shoot some wicked-cool photos in the gorgeous morning/evening light on the “Garden Island” of Kaua’i.

Well, it is vacation and I’m being rather lazy, which honestly, isn’t all that different from my non-vacation lifestyle. What I’m getting at is: I haven’t really taken any photos other with anything other than my iPhone, so I don’t have anything post-worthy.

Instead I’m sharing this photo (that I didn’t even take) of a green sea turtle, as seen at Ke’e beach on the North Shore a couple of days ago.

Things are good here, with the notable exception of the rooster that seems to wake me up earlier each day.

Aloha,
CP

NOTE: This photo was taken by my scuba/snorkel-crazy aunt while I was drinking a gin and tonic by the pool. This is the first time I’ve been to Kauai and didn’t go scuba diving. Like I said, I’m feeling lazy.

OLD SCHOOL

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

This is a preview of a sports profile we are doing: John Cook, 72, will compete in the New York City Triathlon on July 20. He poses at home in Stamford, Conn. on Monday, July 14, 2008.

This is a three light setup, and I really have to thank the Strobist for this. He is a great resource and I’ve learned so much from his blog lately. I got lucky and had somebody to help me with this, holding up a strobe in a shoot-through umbrella over John’s head. I was going to make him jump in the water to get a little wet but we spotted some jellyfish around the dock and decided it would be better to douse him with a plastic bailer from a nearby Boston Whaler…

HIP SHOT

Chris Preovolos/Staff photo

My left hip hit the shutter button while walking down West Broad during the Sagra Delle Regne parade in Stamford. This happened seconds before I cracked the crystal on my vintage Girard-Perregaux. Wristwatch vs. the butt-end of a Nikon D2H…camera wins…d’oh.

SAY “SUNNY”

Chris Preovolos/Stamford Advocate

Above: Jean Bobwich, of Norwalk, takes a photo during the Norwalk Historical Society’s Independence Day Program.

I haven’t updated for a while, so here you go. I was shooting the reading of the Declaration of Independence in Norwalk and fortunately the rain held off until just after the event.

Sadly, because of my work schedule, I was unable to watch Joey “Jaws” Chestnut (a fellow Vallejo native and fellow San Jose State Spartan) defend his international record in the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest in Coney Island today. After reaching a draw with Takeru “The Tsunami” Kobayashi during regulation, Chestnut was able to retain possession of The Mustard Belt after winning the five-dog eat-off. Go Joey, go!

Below: Roger Smith, of Wilton, left, reads the Declaration of Independence while Harding Dies, of Norwalk, holds an American flag during the Norwalk Historical Society’s Independence Day Program.
