HEAVY LIFTING

Chris Preovolos/Staff photo

Tzemach Shemtov, 9, holds a Torah scroll while rabbis prepare for the Rosh Hashana prayer service at the Chabad of Stamford on Monday.

Some colleagues here – who shall remain nameless – have accused me of neglecting the photo blog and thinking too much about food lately. Well here is a photo. I’d like to note that Rabbi Deren and everybody at the Chabad of Stamford was super-helpful today. Thanks and shalom.

GAME FACE

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

Sofia Rinaldi, 12, center, puts on her game-face during the Stamford Youth Foundation‘s middle school field hockey team practice at Rippowam Middle School.

MAKING ME FEEL OLD: I had the following conversation with an eleven-year-old before the practice:

KID: Is that the new iPhone?
ME: Yeah.
KID: I don’t even have a cell phone.
ME: Well, I didn’t have one until I was in college.
KID: Yeah, but…
ME: Wait. Please don’t say ‘they didn’t have them when you were a kid.’
KID: Well, they didn’t.
ME: Hey, I’m still hanging on to my twenties. I’m not that old. I had a beeper.

HOME, SWEET HOME

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

Franny Litalien leaves her New Canaan apartment as her ride waits to take her to a doctor’s appointment. Ed Vaupel, a volunteer with Staying Put In New Canaan, provided the ride.

Look for this upcoming story about seniors being able to stay independently in their own homes, a concern that many of us have faced with our own families. My parents recently downsized their life and moved to a smaller home – a change that was both exciting and sad; a new chapter. Franny said she was very lucky to get into this apartment complex and seemed happy to start her new chapter. She invited me back for tea and I’ll definitely take her up on the offer.

CALLING THE GAME

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

Al Vazquea, umpire, Art Ronaghan, with down marker, and Greg Sperling, head linesman, gather at the bench prior to the start of the Trinity Catholic vs. Darien football game on the first Saturday of the FCIAC season. There are five officials for high school football games, with Vazquez watching the interior linesman and Sperling responsible for the ends and backfield.

I intended to get a shot at this game for my monthly “Curriculum” column, basically anything associated with education. I know this is a stretch, but I liked this image. And, it was interesting to talk to them about each official’s responsibility on the field. In all my years covering football I never quite understood what they did out there. I learn something new everyday in this job.

DIRT FARMER

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

Levon Helm at Arts Crafts & Blues on Bedford in Stamford last weekend.

NOTE TO SELF: The next time you drop one of your expensive, company-supplied, DSLR cameras onto a concrete sidewalk, try not to do it while standing next to your boss.

FLESH TONES

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

Ish Schuurbiers etches a fish tattoo on Jason Farley’s arm at Ink-Side-Out Tattoo. Schuurbiers outlined the tattoo freehand. The entire process will take eight hours to complete. Norwalk’s Board of Health will start inspecting tattoo parlors in the city. City officials believe that the state’s system of inspection is not comprehensive enough.

Ok, I honestly have to say that I never quite got the tattoo concept. But after spending time with this talented artist, I have a new found appreciation for the art form. Now that’s not to say that I’m going to run out and decorate my skin but I get the attraction. Man it still looks like it hurts. A lot!

CONNECTICUT REMEMBERS

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

DeAnna Cuseo, of Westport, center, stands during the singing of “God Bless America” during the “Connecticut Remembers” Sept. 11 memorial service at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

These coin-operarted binoculars, aimed down the Long Island Sound towards New York City, would have witnessed the Sept. 11 attacks.

RED, WHITE & CHROME

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

Cathie Caraglior and Tony Bigica, of Stratford, talk before the 8th Annual CT United Ride, a 9/11 memorial event at Norden Park in Norwalk.

I have to say, I’m not really a Harley fan, but to each his own. I suppose. Sadly outnumbered were a few nice European bikes; a vintage BMW, Triumph or a Moto Guzzi here and there. Nice.
