I found this is front of Target on Broad street while walking in the rain to an appointment at the optometrist.

Dude, new glasses are expensive. I’m accepting donations to help pay for my improved corrected vision.

P.S. After having my eyes dilated I can’t see anything. Hopefully this will wear off before my first assignment.

STAMPRISE

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

David Flanagan, of Milford, keeps the grounds at the Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery on Oaklawn Ave. in Stamford on Monday.

I saw this on the way into work today. I’m too caffeinated to try to think of something to write here, let alone come up with a headline other than what I slugged the photo…a combination of the words “Stamford” and “enterprise.” So…yeah.

CARRYING A BIG STICK

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

The Stamford High School field hockey team conducts a practice Friday afternoon to prepare for Sunday’s CIAC Class L championship game against Simsbury.  The 13th seeded Black Knights will look to defend their championship title Sunday at 12:30pm at Wethersfield High School.

I played field hockey in high school, yes, many, many years ago, and remember loving the skirts.   I never saw much action on the field, more of a “bench warmer”, but the sport and the players have come a long way since then.  I photographed Stamford’s semi-final game earlier this week and witnessed a group of disciplined, dedicated athletes who play this game well, really well!  The addition in recent years of eye protection was a smart idea.  This game is much more physical than I remember.  So much for the pretty pleated skirts and pink balls.  Go Black Knights!

REFLECTIONS ON DEADLINE

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

Chris Barron, the lead singer of the Spin Doctors, is reflected in a laminated poster near the stage while performing a solo act during a benefit for Family Centers at the Palace Theatre.

The benefit concert at the Palace Theatre I was shooting tonight ran a little later than expected.

After calling the copy desk and promising photos by 9:45, I ended up shooting perhaps 30 seconds – literally – of Suzanne Vega performing before sprinting back to my house to file.

Now, I say sprinting, but it was more of a sprint, cramp, walk, sprint, cramp, walk cycle of embarrassment than anything else. Seeing me hustle with gear, in the rain, in duck boots, is not a pretty sight. (At this point, I am declining to disclose how close I actually live to the Palace for fear or compounding the humor that could be made of my inability to to get back home rapidly)

Suffice it to say, I made it back in once piece and was able to file and forget with four minutes to spare.

VETERAN’S DAY PARADE

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

Louis Blanco, left, and his mother, Mary, right, watch the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Stamford on Sunday. Louis brought his mom down to catch a little of the parade before her shift at Lord & Taylor.

The parade just started and “she only has eight minutes,” Louis told me.

MAKING HISTORY

Kathleen O’Rourke/The Advocate

Obama supporters gather on election night at the Shining Star Lodge to record results and rally last minute voters.

Dwight DePina, 10, turns to Elaine Mitchell with questions as he watches results come in with Obama supporters at the Shining Star Lodge.

I spent election night covering different locations where Obama supporters were gathered.   Starting at the Shining Star Lodge I watched the West Side working class people rally voters and record results on the top floor of the Elks Lodge with bare bulb lamps and boxes of coffee.  I finished my night at Egane & Clive’s Restaurant with champagne and sushi being enjoyed by a younger, newer generation of African Americans who have become passionately active in politics.  Despite the obvious differences, people in both venues were energized and many brought to tears as they watched this monumental event.  This was my 11th year covering elections and it will be the most memorable, by far.

Tony Peters, Crystal Perry and Takeia McAlister, of Stamford, cheer as they watch results come in with a group of Obama supporters at Egane & Clive’s Restaurant on Bedford St.
