Matthew Auguste, 9, waits with his grandparents after a Sunday service at The Haitian American Catholic Center in Stamford, Conn. Matthew was one of the altar servers from the Mass and wondered if he was in any of my photos. As he took me over to meet his grandparents he paused by the window to talk about his sister. The three of them were waiting for her as she had coffee in the community room downstairs.

I arrived a half hour before the start of the Ash Wednesday celebration at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Stamford, Conn. and found Rev. James R. Wheeler preparing to lead the service. I stood by during this private moment and watched as he put on his robe and kissed the stole before putting it around his neck.
