FRESHMAN ORIENTATION

1/11/2009
After trailing Congressman Jim Himes, Connecticut’s new 4th District representative in the House of Representatives on the first day of the 111th Congress, I produced this audio slideshow.

Yeah, it was more ice than anything else. Or you know, frozen crusty snow. Whatever you call that.

LOS TRES REYES

Chris Preovolos/The Advocate

ABOVE:
The Three Kings, a/k/a, Armando Gonzalez and Roy Morgan, of Stamford, and Florentine Mercado, of Perth-Amboy, N.J., confer in a locker room during the Latino Foundation of Stamford’s annual Three Kings event at the Yerwood Center in Stamford.

There was – as usual – enough slack time in this assignment to duck out and head to Casa Villa for tacos de barbacoa de cabrito. Check out the goat taco action on the Lunch Break Chronicles.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS

Paul Desmarais/ Staff Photo

Some of the coolest people in Fairfield County could be found at Compo Beach in Wesport on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2009. The event; the 6th Annual Polar Plunge was sponsored by the Team Mossman triathlon club is held annually as a fund raiser for Save the Children. Andrea Williamson-Hughes (center) wrote the names of her sponsors on herself in red Magic Marker as a way of thanking them for their support.

This is the 6th time I joined Team Mossman on New Year’s Day for their Polar Plunge event. The Plunge is a fundraiser for Westport-based Save the Children. The exuberance of the group; considering that they jump into 40 degree water in bathing suits in January is remarkable. Every year a core group of stalwarts makes the pilgrimage to Compo Beach in Westport. This is the third time I photographed Andrea Williamson-Hughes. This year, she ‘double-dipped’. She along with Robin Meyers sprinted in once, ran out, then came into the water a second time. That is a whole lot of new year fortitude. Either that or the entire assembly is stark raving mad.
