In Sight

Autumn leaves are reflected in the surface of the Wepawaug River in Eisenhower Park in Milford. Reflection photos like this work well when the water is dark but the reflected leaves are lit by sunlight. The painterly effect comes from the fact that the shutter speed was slow enough to produce a blurring effect. Just the right amount I think.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephants dined outside the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. Thursday, part of their promotions for the show which runs through Sunday. The event was rescheduled due to the rain on Wednesday so that might be why the crowd of onlookers was smaller than years past. Or maybe it was because there were no clowns? That is my favorite part. Luckily, I get to cover the show tomorrow. I better see some clowns!

I’ve always found it funny to watch how the dogs act during these blessing ceremonies- barking, pulling their owners off their chairs to get to other dogs( happened today, lady went sprawling). I have a photo where the dog on left is sniffing the dog at center in the way dogs do. Very funny, but alas good taste prevailed in my editing decision.

The inside scoop is this. Lines and wait times can be a lot shorter if you go later in the week. I can’t personally confirm this, but did hear it mentioned more than once while I was there.

Shouts rang out in the newsroom. The photo staff leapt into action. What was all the ruckus about? A rainbow over Bridgeport! We work in a windowless room so thank goodness for the shouts. In photojournalism, it is all about timing. You have to think and move fast. Next time, we will take the steps up to the roof two-at-a-time as we almost missed this beauty.

Reposting this, so that I could try adding a caption. This whole blogging thing is new to me, so you all can share in my struggles as I try to figure it out. Photo was taken the day after Hurricane Irene rolled through. The field pictured is the exact location where the massive annual Gathering of the Vibes Festival took place just two weeks earlier. Imagine the scene if the timing had been just a little different!
