A cop’s best friend

MTA Police Officer Kevin Pimpinelli rides the escalator at the Stamford train station with his K-9 unit partner “Mullen” on Tuesday. Mullen recently won top dog honors in the U.S. Police Canine Association’s annual finals.

There’s a certain amount of intimidation that comes along with seeing a police officer and his 85 pound German Shepherd patroling the tracks at a local train station. But once you meet “Mullen” and are given the go-ahead to reach out and pet him, the fear vanishes. This K-9 team is one of fifty units that patrol the New York and Connecticut rails, roads and tunnels. “Last year we cleared 130 packages on the New Haven line alone. We know how to police a railroad,”  MTA Sgt. Bill Finucane said from their offices at the Stamford Transportation Center. “He (Mullen) saves a lot of time and gets the trains moving,” said Finucane.

State Capitol Top Ten List

The 2011 Legislative session wrapped up on Wednesday at midnight and for the first time in my journalistic career I was there to witness the madness. Thankfully we have a staff of ace political reporters whose job it is to outline the intricacies of lawmaking, caucuses and lobbyists because the whole process was mind-boggling. But as I watched the day unfold I took note of a few interesting observations. Here is my ‘Top Ten List’

1.    It is vital to be comfortable and always have an extra pair of shoes on hand.
2.   The House chamber also serves as the Capitol cafeteria with at least half the legislators eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner at any given time.
3.   The best candy selection sits right outside the room atop the desk on the left.
4.   Do not block the door or stand in front of the entrance because inevitably someone will ask, and not very politely, that you move.
5.   Beautiful light comes through the western facing windows around 4:00pm this time of year.
6.   The Capitol security detail, who are very nice, will ask to see your press pass so introduce yourself upfront and do away with the formality.
7.   The session never starts on time, unless it’s 11:30pm on closing night and then they move like wildfire.
8.   Soda machine is on the left side of the hallway, snack machine on the right. If you mix it up, it’s a long walk back.
9.   The air conditioning in the hallways of the Capitol is practically nonexistent.
10. There is a couch in the ladies room on the second floor, great for a quick nap.

My advice: if you ever get a chance to attend closing day, go for it. The energy is contagious and it’s a day you’ll remember forever. Check out Heart Media reporter Brian Lockhart’s ‘Political Capitol’ blog: HERE

TCHS Class of 2011

TOP: Graduates gather in classrooms before the start of the Trinity Catholic 2011 Commencement Exercises. ABOVE: The Trinity Catholic High School Class of 2011 celebrate after receiving their diplomas at the event on Saturday.

I photographed my first graduation of the season today and although this day marks the start of a new and exciting adventure for the students, it signifies something completely different in the world of journalism. As these new graduates embark on the path to achieving their dreams, we photographers and reporters begin a month-long lineup of one graduation after another. Desperately trying to deliver some fresh creativity to the images and a new twist on the story.  It is a difficult task but it never diminishes the excitement and emotion I feel when hearing “Pomp and Circumstance” and watching the proud parents gather for the event. Congratulations to all the 2011 graduates out there!

Summer view

I was at The Italian Center today covering the Book & Author Luncheon, presented by the Friends of The Ferguson Library.  As I waited for the event to begin I glanced out the window and this scene caught my eye. My birthday falls in June and growing up it always coincided with the last day of school. This moment brought me back to the day when I would celebrate the end of the school year, and my birthday, with a big pool party at my house. Gone are summer’s off and pool parties but the month of June will always be my time to shine. Happy Birthday to me.

No ordinary weekend

TOP: Veteran Ralph Bocuzzo joins other veterans, faculty and students at the New Canaan Veterans’ Symposium at New Canaan High School on Friday. ABOVE: Members of the US Marine Corps Parris Island Band prepare backstage before performing at the event.

The title of my post “No Ordinary Weekend” was the theme of the film played at today’s event. It was created by New Canaan High School students Rob Mallozzzi, Kyle Conner and Harrison Harkey. Photographs of young men and women in combat and fighting America’s wars flashed on the screen accompanied by Mallozzi’s original composition. A fitting tribute to the veterans in attendance and those who never made it home. Read the story: HERE
