Revis Island Missing Darrelle

We’re back! Better than ever? I’ll let you decide.

What an off-season it’s been for the Jets. After advancing to the AFC championship game last January, New York has been more active than any other team in the league. Here’s a quick recap. (Don’t worry, I’ll get to Darrelle.)

LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Cromartie, Santonio Holmes, Jason Taylor, Brodney Pool, and Nick Folk are in. So are Kyle Wilson and Joe McKnight via the draft. Leon Washington, Alan Faneca, Kerry Rhodes, and Jay Feely are out. There’s more, and that’s because GM Mike Tannenbaum has been working hard to get the Jets 30 minutes of better football.

And now, Darrelle Revis. And this isn’t good.

Revis was absent from the Jets’ voluntary workout yesterday morning in Florham Park, apparently unhappy about the lack of progress in talks to rework his contract. Here’s Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post:

Revis still has three years and $21 million left on his original rookie contract but is looking for a new deal worth slightly more than the Raiders’ Nnamdi Asomugha, who is the NFL’s highest-paid corner at an average of more than $15 million per year.

According to a source, the Jets’ offer in late May was nowhere near that amount and was believed to be in the range of $10 million per year. Revis also has told friends that he is convinced the Jets deliberately tried to make him look like the bad guy with fans by leaking an Internet report last month that he was seeking $20 million a year, a claim a Jets spokesperson said is “simply not true.”

The Jets are playing with fire here. Revis wants to be the highest paid cornerback in the game. He should be. He’s the best at his position. This is bad news in an otherwise great off-season for Gang Green.
