Talking… Turkey, Rowayton

Rowayton & Norwalk Fire Departments offers safe cooking tips for Thanksgiving

As households in Norwalk prepare for Thanksgiving, the Norwalk Fire Department reminds residents to cook with caution this holiday season. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Cooking fires peak on Thanksgiving Day, but these fires can be prevented. A few easy steps can save your life!

  • When cooking, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the stove. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires.
  • Keep towels, pot holders, cutting boards, curtains, and paper products away from the stove.
  • Keep the stove and oven clean to prevent grease build-up.
  • If a cooking fire starts, smother it with a pot lid. Never throw water on a grease fire.
  • Heat oil slowly to avoid splattering. Be extra careful when frying foods.
  • If a fire starts in the microwave or oven, keep the door closed.
  • Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. Get a fire extinguisher and learn how to use it.
  • Purchase a fried turkey from a grocery store, specialty food store, or restaurant instead of frying it yourself.
