Wednesday, April 17 @ 7pm – Great Decisions – China in Africa

Great Decisions Discussion Group – Topic:  China in Africa - What interests govern China’s engagement in Africa? Should China’s growing emphasis on political ties and natural resource extraction inform U.S. relations with African nations?  Wednesday evening, April 17 @ 7pm at the Rowayton Library

Developed by the Foreign Policy Association, the Great Decisions Discussion Program is the oldest and largest grass-roots world affairs education program of its kind in the country. The Great Decisions Discussion Program is FPA’s public education initiative to create more informed and engaged citizens by bringing people together to discuss U.S. foreign policy and global affairs issues. The session topics include:  China in Africa, and Threat Assessment. Materials are provided to participants and are available at the Rowayton Library. This program is free and open to the public. The sessions are led by Erik Rambusch, Adjunct Professor at Norwalk Community College.  Discussion dates are 4/17 and 5/1. Rowayton Kids Succeed at Odyssey of the Mind Connecticut State Finals…

Once again, Norwalk Public Schools were well represented at the 2013 Odyssey of the Mind Connecticut State Final, held on April 6th in Bristol, with 9 teams from 5 schools attending – Brian McMahon, Roton Middle School, Brookside School, Naramake School and Rowayton School.    In addition, five of the Norwalk teams have earned a berth at the World Finals, to be held May 22-25 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI.  Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving program for students K-12 and college.  It provides teams the opportunity to learn teamwork, brainstorming, self-reliance and respect for individual strengths.  Once teams select a long term problem from a choice of five, they spend five months developing a theatrical and engineering solution.  A coach is available to provide guidance, but cannot provide any assistance which might impact the solution.  Just as much fun are the spontaneous problems, where the students develop brainstorming skills to solve problems given at the competition.  The five teams selected for the world finals spend the next six weeks fine tuning their performances and trying to raise funds to offset the costs for the trip to Michigan.

The participating Norwalk teams attending World Finals are as follows:

  • Roton Middle School – 1st Place, The Email Must Go Through Division II: Emma Curtin, Olivia Fassett, Jack Feinstein, Cate Herbert, Derek Lue, Keara Meyerson, Isabel Vineyard
  • Rowayton Elementary School – 2nd Place, ARTchitecture: The Musical Division II: Julia Arsenault, Julia Curtin, Jamie Hogan, Ethan Keyes, Rachel Smith, Jason Tagariello
  • Rowayton Elementary School – 2nd Place, It’s How You Look At It Division I: Michael Berkowitz, Peter Meyerson, Emma Mulligan, Shelby Oak, Victoria Parizot, Alex Vineyard

Winning Artists – 40 under 40 at the Rowayton Arts Center

“Visage,” an acrylic painting by Bruce Horan (39) of Darien, won the $250 prize for Best in Show at the second annual “40 Under 40,” an exhibition of works in all media by artists ages 15-39. The other winners are 1st – Shamik Ganguly (37) of Stamford; 2nd – Pilar Garra (23) of New Canaan; 3rd Macy Goh (24) of New York City; and honorable mention – Jill Sarver (32) of Bridgeport. The exhibit in the Main Gallery of the Rowayton Arts Center, 145 Rowayton Avenue, continues through April 28.  Other artists juried into the exhibition include (by town): Norwalk – David Ely (16), Erin Jenkins (27); and Rowayton – Keith Appleby (24), Lara Appleby (30), Lisa Dunne (39), Les Gilman (16), Isabelle Lahaussois (15), Katie Stockton (37).

Four of the artists in the exhibition will be invited to discuss their inspiration, process and art during ATRAC, a free evening of art talk that begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. Following the discussion, attendees can view additional works by the artists and talk informally with them during a reception in RAC’s upstairs studio.

“The Woodcuts of Antonio Frasconi,” is running concurrently with “40 Under 40.” This solo show in RAC’s Portside Gallery features works by internationally-acclaimed woodcut artist Antonio Frasconi, who died in January at the age of 93.

The Sixth Taxing District has announced that the Dog Park in Rowayton (at the Rowayton Community Center) will be closed for lawn repair now through May 19.

Saturday, April 13 @ 1-4pm – Scrabble Time

ScrabbleTime is for everyone (the original Connecticut board game) at the Rowayton Library.  Join your neighbors for a good game of Scrabble on Ssaturday, April 13 from 1-4pm.  There will be 6 tables set up.  All materials will be provided.  Players of all ages are welcome.

Join us at the Rowayton Library for a morning experience of Yoga.  The program on Saturday, April 13 @ 10:30am is for moms and their infants 6 weeks to pre-crawling.  Mom and baby will practice yoga together!  Moms will restore and rejuvenate through stretching and strengthening poses. Babies will enjoy yoga poses to aid in digestion & sleep. This class is a great opportunity to bond with your baby and to connect with other moms.

Following that program, at 11am, is for moms and their tots crawlers – 3 years old.  Partner with your little one for animated yoga poses, games, music and breathing exercises that help to strengthen coordination and build body awareness. This fun class is a great opportunity for bonding with your child, while strengthening their growing muscles.  Both programs are free and open to the public.  Space is limited and please respect the age groupings.

Friday evening, April 12 @ 7pm at the Rowayton Library

When Becky Aikman had to remake her life, she gathered five other young widows like herself and took a forthright approach to finding happiness again. A special Portside Gallery show of works by internationally-acclaimed woodcut artist Antonio Frasconi opens April 7 at the Rowayton Arts Center.

Frasconi, who died in January at the age of 93, was among RAC’s original members, served on its first Board and taught woodcut classes at the Arts Center during the 1960s.  Beginning at 2pm on Sunday, April 7, there will be a free curator’s tour and a screening of the documentary, “The Woodcuts of Antonio Frasconi.”

The opening reception for the show follows at 4pm.  Frasconi illustrated and designed more than 100 books, including collections of poetry by Langston Hughes, Walt Whitman, and Pablo Neruda. His woodcuts also were selected for magazine covers, record albums, calendars, posters and other items. His woodcuts ranged from illustrations for children’s books to statements about racism, injustice and poverty to natural scenes he observed from his home in South Norwalk.

“The Woodcuts of Antonio Frasconi” and RAC’s “40 Under 40″ exhibition in the Main Gallery continue through April 28. Admission is free and RAC gallery hours are 12-5pm Tuesdays-Saturdays and 1-4pm Sundays. Visit www.rowaytonartscenter.org for information or call 203-866-2744.
