Marshall Crenshaw at Pinkney Park, Sunday, August 28th @ 5:30pm

POSTPONED:  NEW DATE AND TIME TO FOLLOW: The Rowayton Civic Association is presenting Marshall Crenshaw and Freedy Johnson (singer-songwriters) (originally scheduled for Sunday evening, August 28th at 5:30pm at Pinkney Park – new date and time to follow).  Bring a picnic, a blanket, family and friends.  This program is part of the RCA Summer Music Festival – Music by the Water and this week’s concert is sponsored by the Sails American Grill, Rowayton Fuel, and Fairfield County Bank.

NEW DATE AND TIME: Annual Arthur J. Ladrigan Swim Races and Family Fun Day at Bayley Beach,Saturday, September 10th

RCA Ladrigan Swim Races have been postponed from Sunday, August 28 until Saturday, September 10th at 11am due to Hurricane Irene

Celebrate the end of the summer season with the annual Arthur J. Ladrigan Swim Races and Family Fun Day at Bayley Beach, Saturday, September 10that 11am.   Sign-ups for the one-mile & half-mile races will be conducted all online this year prior to the event at www.rowaytonct.com. Following the one-mile & half-mile races are the children’s swim races, which are grouped by age and run parallel to the beach. Finally, after the awards ceremony all are invited to join in the traditional beach games, which include a tug-of-war, a pie-eating contest and a treasure hunt.  Last year, we saw another record turnout for the Arthur J. Ladrigan Family Swim Races held at Bayley Beach. Once again, we enjoyed a beautiful day with enough events for the entire family. Attendance was greatly improved and we even saw a veteran winner unseated for the first time in years!

Aside from the prowess of all our swimmers and the enthusiastic support of all of those who volunteer: the suggestion and comments we receive from our community is what drives this event successfully forward each year. From organizational comments to safety concerns, the RCA is listening carefully.  With growing participation we understand the need to have more volunteers present and more safety measures in place. For this reason we will now be initiating a $20 entrance fee for each swimmer/kayak team. Due to the event’s popularity we need to offset some of our costs and plan for a better, more organized event. Furthermore, due to feedback and concerns of past participants we have decided to reroute the Lighthouse Race route in efforts to provide a safer experience for all swimmers and volunteers.  Once again we appreciate the support of all our volunteers, and do hope to get even more of the community involved to help organize onshore events as well as seasoned boaters to help with offshore logistics.

Christina Anzalone and John Flynn helped load the 195 boxes of books donated by the Rowayton Library community into the truck bound to Better World Books to benefit the schools of New Orleans hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. Christina came to the Rowayton Library through the Mayor’s summer internship program 4 years ago and John is new to the program this summer.

On Tuesday, the Rowayton Library and their summer interns from the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program, packed up and shipped out 195 cartons of used books to Better World Books for the benefit of the children in New Orleans who are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Over 80% of schools were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. In the most underserved areas, there’s 1 book for every 300 children.

The Rowayton Library teamed up with Better World Books to change that and have joined in on the Epic Book Drive.   The goal was to send 3,000 books.  And yes, YOU did it!  Thanks to the incredible book donations by the Rowayton residents, the Rowayton Library was able to fill 195 boxes (containing more than 4,000 books) to send.  To date, the Epic Book Drive has collected over 250,000 books to benefit the Recovery School District in New Orleans. Thousands of useful books are being donated, and the rest are being sold to raise funds for the school libraries.  Thank you, everyone!  Thank you, thank you, thank YOU!

Quite something to wash up on one of sleepy Rowayton’s beaches

Hawksbill Turtle found at Rowayton’s South Beach Monday morning by resident Tia Sidey

Monday morning’s stroll along Rowayton’s South Beach brought local resident Tia Sidey face to face with what she first thought was a sad sign of modern times… the demise of a member of the critically endangered species of sea turtle, the Hawksbill.

This animal, measuring 33.5″ long over the back and 32″ on its belly, had apparently died of injuries incurred during some sort of boating accident.

So sad.  But then, Ms. Sidey contacted her friend at the Maritime Aquarium, Joe Schnierlein, to find out more about this animal, and he told her that finding such a creature (and a large one at that) inhabiting these waters… the Long Island Sound… is a good thing.  It means that our waters are rich with fish (food for the Hawksbill turtle) and that this species of turtle, ever so rare, has an improved chance in survival and so does our waterway.

So, sad but true, it sounds like this turtle is a sign of good things happening in our Sound.

Kids are invited to see the movie The Emperor’s New Groove at the Rowayton Library, Friday afternoon, August 26th at 2pm.  This film is rated G.

The Rowayton Library buys many thousands of new books, movies, and CDs each year and now Rowayton Library card holders can receive weekly email alerts displaying  the newest books, DVDs, CDs, and audio books that the library  purchases each week.  Hear about the many exciting bestsellers, movies, music, and recorded books almost the very moment they arrive at the Rowayton Library.

Whenever you spot something of interest, you’ll be able to click instantly, reserve it, and check it out at your convenience… all you need is a Rowayton Library card. And of course, like everything else in the library, this service is free!
