The Rowayton Historical Society announces the election of two new board members

The Rowayton Historical Society is delighted to announce the election of two new board members to the RHS Board of Trustees.  Jeff Andrea and Denise Corcoran bring a range of talents and experience to the board and were voted in during the Annual Meeting of the society held on January 24th.

At the Annual Meeting, President Wendell Livingston reported to the membership that 2011 was another spectacular year of growth for the Rowayton Historical Society.  Included in their accomplishments are the run of a six month quilt exhibition which resulted in record attendance, the grand opening of the half shell – our fabulous new gift shop, exciting discoveries among the archives – including Rowayton diaries from the mid 1800s, the launch of a fun family cooking contest – the Chili Throwdown – so successful it will be repeated annually, the creation of a beautiful 19th century garden in Pinkney Park, the continued restoration, identification and organization of the RHS archives, and a growing corps of volunteers who have contributed generously their time, talents and enthusiasm towards the preservation of Rowayton’s history.

Calling ALL PETS… of Rowayton!

The Rowayton Library will pay tribute to the “Pets of Rowayton” for the fifth year – this coming March on the library’s website www.Rowayton.org.  So, let us honor your Rowayton Pet by making a READ Poster with their picture – to inspire the children of this community to READ!

Beginning February 1, please visit the Rowayton Library’s website and fill out the form, attach a JPG format picture of your Pet (no people), and tell us your Pet’s name, Breed/species/etc., your Pet’s age, and funny anecdotes you want to include – or just tell us how special your pet is to you and your family. Include your name, your address, and your telephone number. We will be happy to post your pet’s picture on the Library’s website.

The Library staff will create READ posters with these pictures and post them in Rowayton and at Rowayton Elementary School as well as provide the owners with a copy of the poster of their pet.  This is a free program and is open to all pets in Rowayton, CT. Deadline for submission in February 29, 2012.

The Rowayton Library will be participating in Take Your Child To The Library Day on February 4, along with 120 libraries in 12 states… with special activities for families.

Rowayton Historical Society Members Opening Reception, Sunday, February 12 from 3-5pm at the Pinkney Museum: Close to Home: Rowayton and the Civil War

SAVE THE DATE:  Sunday, February 12 from 3-5pm

A commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War (1861-1865) highlighting Rowayton and Norwalk’s participation in the war and its aftermath, including an eight-month-long exhibition, a 7-part Civil War lecture series, and a Union encampment in Pinkney Park will be opening at the Pinkney Museum.  Come learn the fascinating stories about more than 60 soldiers with connections to Rowayton while honoring the men and women who served their country during one of the most traumatic events in our nation’s history.  This exhibit will be open to the public during regular museum hours.

Award-winning Artists and their Students at the Rowayton Arts Center

Artwork by RAC teachers in the new exhibition includes "Green House in Maine," a watercolor painting by Christy Gallagher.

The creativity of award-winning artist-instructors and their students will be spotlighted in ”From the RAC Studio,” an exhibition that opens with a reception from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, at the Rowayton Arts Center Gallery, 145 Rowayton Avenue.  The exhibit continues through January 29.  RAC’s winter gallery hours are 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday).  Admission is free.

Artwork by RAC teachers in the new exhibition includes “Snow,” a painting by Dana Goodfellow, who will present a landscape painting demonstration from 2:-4 p.m. on Sunday, January 15.

The exhibition features works in varied media by RAC’s teachers –Joanne Roy Askildsen, Robert Baxter, Frank Bruckmann, Christy Gallagher, John Grieco, Dana Goodfellow, Anne McCormick and Karl Soderlund—plus some of the adults and young artists who participated in RAC’s 2011 classes.   Also included will be artwork by Kelli Folsom, who will lead a “Dramatic Still Life Painting” workshop in April.

Demonstrations will be held in RAC’s upstairs studio from 2-4 p.m. on three Sundays and will complement the exhibition:

January 15 – “Landscape Painting” with Dana Goodfellow

January 22 – “Figure Drawing Techniques” (mini workshop — bring your art supplies) with John Grieco

January 29 – “Portrait Painting” with Karl Soderlund

Register for Winter Classes at Rowayton Arts Center

Artists at all levels — from beginners to professionals – are invited to register for winter classes at the Rowayton Arts Center. The six-week sessions are taught by award-winning artists and are held in RAC’s large, well-equipped studio. Winter sessions begin the week of January 9. Call 203-866-2744 for details and to register.

Classes for adults include a “Watercolor Color Seminar” with Christy Gallagher on Tuesday. Other classes are “Painting from Photographs” (Tuesday) with Frank Bruckmann, “Landscape Painting for the Beginner” (Thursday) with Dana Goodfellow, “Painting and Drawing” (Monday) and “Figure Drawing” (Friday) with John Grieco and “Painting Principles for All Levels” (Wednesday) with Karl Soderlund.  Special RAC studio opportunities for artists to work with live models include “The Model As Subject” (Thursday) and “Open Sketch” (Sunday) sessions.

Sessions for youth are “Mixed Media Magic” (ages 5-9) on Thursday and “Painting, Drawing, Sculpture & More” (ages 8-11) on Wednesday, both with Joanne Roy Askildsen, RAC’s education director.  In addition to art classes, RAC offers four-week sessions of ”Tai Chi Easy” on Monday mornings with Bill Wrenn.

The Goodwives Quilters and Goodwives Rug Hookers donate handmade crafts in support of the Rowayton Library’s Annual Fund

Handmade Animal Quilt by the Goodwives Quilters

In conjunction with the Rowayton Library’s Annual Fund campaign, the Library is having a free drawing for a handmade quilt and a handmade rug donated by the Goodwives Quilters and Goodwives Rug Hookers.  If you would like to be entered into the drawing for this beautiful quilt and rug, no donation is required.  The Annual Fund Campaign envelope mailed to Rowaytonites can be your entry form or entry forms are available at the Rowayton Library.

The drawing will be held on Tuesday, January 17th, 2011 at noon.  The quilt and rug are on display at the Rowayton Library.  The winning name will be drawn by the Goodwives Quilters.  For more information, please contact the Library at 203-838-5038.

Please support your Rowayton Library this year with a gift during the Annual Fund Campaign.  It is the support of the community that makes the Rowayton Library… just right for Rowayton. The Goodwives Quilters meet every Tuesday at the Rowayton Community Center from 10am-1pm.  The Goodwives Rug Hookers meet once a month on the third Wednesday of every month from 11am-2pm.  Everyone is invited.
