Rowayton Gardeners Meeting – September 8th

Rowayton gardens never rest and neither do the Rowayton Gardeners.  The first membership meeting for the Fall season for the Rowayton Gardeners is on September 8th at the Bayley Beach Pavilion at 11am.  All members are invited to attend.  This year the Club will be presided over by Erin Combs and Sally Tepas.  This promises to be a great year and a fantastic opportunity to ensure that the Club prospers and meets the challenges of 2011/2012.  But they really need your help to meet these challenges.  The club blossoms when everyone works together to gather new ideas and to promote the Gardeners goals and projects.  Plus everyone always enjoys the added benefit of friendship.  Please make your membership count!

An Open Letter of Thanks… from the Rowayton Gardeners

The Rowayton Gardeners would like to thank the Sixth Taxing District for their help in our continuing efforts at the Rowayton School Pond.  Most recently with their assistance we installed two additional benches along the path.  We hope this will lead to a further appreciation and enjoyment of the beauty of this special place.

Dear Rowayton Gardeners:

It has been a great honor to have been your president over the last two years.  I thank the previous Executive Board: Charlotte, Betsy, Lisa, Bev and Sally, all the Committee Chairs and Membership for your support and hard work.  At yesterday’s meeting the Nominating Committee Executive presented the new Executive Slate which was unanimously approved by the membership.

New Executive Board:  Co- Presidents – Sally Tepas and Erin Combs; Vice President- Lisa Shanahan; Treasurer- Betsy Bain; Asst. Treasurer- Frani Taylor; Recording Secretary- Suzanne Miller; Corresponding Secretary-Bev Hennessey.

As I leave this office to my successors, Sally Tepas and Erin Combs, I know I leave you in excellent hands. Sally, Ex- President and master gardener has been a very good friend and inspiration to me since I joined four years ago.  Erin Combs, one of our newest members, with her experience in garden design and interest in garden
education will bring fresh ideas to Rowayton Gardeners.  I look forward to their leadership.  Thank you for the photo album, book and great memories, I will treasure them  always.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Padro,

Rowayton Gardeners Past President.

Dear Rowayton Gardeners,

Thank you for all of your extraordinary help with this year’s Plant Sale and for all the work that was done in the run up to the sale.  It was a glorious day.

Great gratitude goes to Tammy Langalis for organizing the perennial digs and to all of you who did the digging.  Four hundred and ninety perennials were dug up and they looked wonderful for having the extra time to get established in their pots.

Thanks to Betsy Bain, Karen Larocque, Petrea Poler and Nancy Schlater for going to the various wholesalers.

Thanks also to all of you who helped unload the delivery on Friday and for your work setting up the room to be a feast for the eyes for all who entered.

Special thanks to Rose Curtin and Lily Langotsky – Rose for leading the staging of the room and Lily for arranging the garden carts and porch planter so beautifully.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten to single out some of you – my apologies.

Sincerely,

Andrea Woodworth,

Rowayton Gardeners Garden Sale Chair.

Gardening 101 @ the Rowayton Library

Gardening 101 @ the Rowayton Library

Come join Rowayton Gardener Erin Combs on Wednesday, May 4th at 11 a.m. at the Rowayton Library for some hands-on garden education in the lovely Community Center and Library gardens. This is a great chance to come and learn about what plants might be right for your space and to ask questions about how to tend them once they are nestled into their new home!

Erin will address springtime gardening concerns & tasks, proper soil amendment, proper plant selection for your garden, all while everyone gets to practice a little gardening of our own with some of the prospective Rowayton Gardener’s plant sale items. If the weather is good we will be working outside on the library grounds so please come prepared to get a bit dirty.

All attendees will receive a $5 coupon towards plant purchases at the Rowayton Gardeners’ Sale on Saturday, May 7th.

Erin has been gardening since she was very small with her parents in Maine but began educating herself formally in college when she took her first job at the Mount Holyoke College arboretum (her alma mater). From there she had numerous landscaping jobs on Long Island and in NYC, and spent a lot of time in various Manhattan rooftop gardens and beautiful townhouse gardens in Brooklyn. Erin started her own small garden design and installation business 6 year ago and has been digging in the dirt ever since. Her real passion, though, is in the garden education field and she  just loves to be a part of such a wonderful gardening community as Rowayton.

Please RSVP as space is limited and a light lunch will be served (after we wash up).  This program is free and open to the public.  Call the Library to reserve a spot! 203-838-5038.  The Rowayton Library is located at 33 Highland Avenue, Rowayton.
