DAR announces essay contest winners

The winners of the 2012-2013 DAR American History Essay Contest were honored on March 14, 2013 at the Freelove Baldwin Stow DAR Chapter House in Milford, CT.

The essay contest is open to 5th through 8th grades at all Milford Schools.  This year’s topic was “Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence.”

The student were asked to focus on the often unrecognized people and groups, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and others who provided military, patriotic, and public service in support of the American Revolution.  They were to describe a particular person or group and how they supported the cause for American Independence and explain why it is especially important to honor the unsung heroes and often forgotten patriots.

This year’s essay contest 5th through 8th grade winners were:

Grade 5 :

First Place:  Hailey Cupole (St. Gabriel)

Second Place:  Meghan Loftus (St. Gabriel)

Third Place: Jiries Hanania (St. Gabriel)

Hon. Mention:  Ethan Wicko (St. Gabriel)

Grade 6:

First Place: Spencer Mehan (St/ Gabriel)

Second Place: Mary Sullivan (St. Gabriel)

Third Place: Lexi Leparik (St. Gabriel)

Hon. Mention: Olivia Dunn (St. Mary)

Grade 7:

First Place:  Julia Petalcorin (St. Mary)

Second Place: Karlee Chapman (St. Gabriel)

Third Place: David Albright (St. Mary)

Hon. Mention: Katherine Paine (St. Mary)

Grade 8:

First Place:  Jesse Greene (St. Gabriel)

Second Place: Margaret Sullivan (St. Gabriel)

Third Place: John Warren (St. Gabriel)

Hon. Mention – Lauren Haverl (St. Mary)

    It’s a shame that the Milford public schools did not participate in this history contest. Or, perhaps they did, but the list of winners seems to indicate that only St. Gabriel’s and St. Mary’s students participated…….
