An undercover sting operation on Wednesday caught three businesses selling tobacco to minors, police said.

There were 17 stores visited by city police officers, and staff members of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ tobacco enforcement unit.

Under the direction and supervision of DMHAS investigators, an underage youth, employed by the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program TPEP), entered the establishments and attempted to purchase tobacco products.

Clerks at The Wine & Spirits Co., 175 Cherry St., Woodmont Shell, 1345 New Haven Ave. and the Convenience  Junction, 762 Boston Post Road sold cigarettes to the underage customer in violation of state law, Officer Jeff Nielsen said.
