More than 900 apply to be city police officer

More than half of the more than 900 men and women who filed out an application for a job as a city of Milford police officer passed a physical agility test on Saturday.

The 547 applicants who met that requirement will take the written exam on June 28th, said Officer Jeff Nielsen, the department spokesman. After that comes an  interview, psychological screening, drug screening, background check and polygraph test.

Remaining applicants will have a medical exam before having their names placed on an eligibility list to fill current and anticipated openings in the department, Nielsen said.

The next class of recruits will enter the Police Academy, at the former Simon Lake School in Devon, this fall and must complete 27 weeks of classroom and field training before being hired.

Starting salary for a Milford police officer is $48,500, according to city budget documents.
