Happy Memorial Day: Fly Your Flag or Your Ensign

|

Vol. III, No. 13

A classic vessel flies an ensign.

Put a rope on a boat, it becomes a line; put a flag on a boat, it becomes an ensign.
An ensign is flown on a ship’s stern to indicate the vessel’s nationality.  To be specific, there are three types of ensigns:

1. A civil ensign: flown by recreational vessels and merchant vessels in most2012 NYYC Annual Regatta A 3594 countries

2. A government ensign, flown by coast guard ships

3. A naval ensign, flown on naval vessels.

But, on shore, they would all just look like flags!  Happy Memorial Day.
