Hartford Commemorates 21st Anniversary of
World AIDS Day, December 1, 2009
‘Universal Access and Human Rights’
People with HIV/AIDS, AIDS advocates and activists will attend Hartford’s World AIDS Day on December 1st, 11 AM – 12, at the Connections Drop-in Center, located at the Institute for Community Research, 146 Wyllys St, Hartford.
Facts about HIV/AIDS IN Connecticut:
• Since 1980, 18,850 people in CT have been reported with HIV/AIDS.
• 10,693 people are reported living with HIV/AIDS in the state as of 6/30/2008.
• Nearly 20,000 people in CT are estimated to be living with HIV; up to 30% are unaware of their status.
• CT ranks 14th in the nation in AIDS cases per capita.
• In 2005, CT had the fastest growing rate of AIDS in New England (Kaiser family Foundation, State health Facts)
• 14% of newly reported cases of HIV/AIDS are under the age of 29.
• Proportionately, Connecticut leads the nation in the number of AIDS cases among injecting drug users; third in cases among women; and third in the nation in cases among Latinos/as. (Kaiser Family Foundation, State Health Facts)
