Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement in reaction to the news today that Johnson & Johnson was aware of customer complaints a year ago about 43 different types of medications that are currently being recalled. The company also knowingly produced contaminated children’s and infant’s Tylenol products.
“The quality control failures flagged by FDA investigators at the McNeil plant are very disturbing. Between the recall late last year of over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol Extra Strength and this recent recall of children and infants’ Tylenol, there are serious concerns about not only the product’s safety, but of the company’s response to known problems. When the company knowingly allows contaminated raw materials to be used in finished products, it should be construed as a criminal act.
“FDA should continue to pursue this investigation aggressively and act accordingly if criminal behavior is uncovered. This case is especially disappointing given that Johnson & Johnson was once viewed as a corporate hero after the Tylenol recall in 1982.”
