One Person’s Trash…

One person’s trash is another’s treasure ,so the saying goes for the hundreds of thousands of people who treasure hunt at garage sales nationwide.

Desperate Housewive’s Teri Hatcher knows something about managing a households as the single and fabulous house wife of Wisteria Lane. It maybe from that starring role that she drew inspiration to kick off her first annual garage sale in her Studio City home to benefit the Aviva Foundation, Westside Food Bank and Casa Pacifica on Saturday.

Invited guests paid $50 to enter and browse through items including Coach purses, Disney hotel packages and boots signed by her Housewives costar Eva Longoria Parker and my own Samantha Knapp Atelier for maisonettestore.com deocrative pillows.

Along with our pillows, never-worn clothes as well as toys and other items once belonging to her daughter Teri’s daughter Emerson filled tables in typical garage sale style. Teri tells People Magazine her daughter came up with the ida to have a garage sale for charity. With that idea and a motivation for giving, Teri & Emerson took to cleaning out closets. Several of Hollywood’s heavy weights pulled at their purse strings.

“I was up all night,” Teri told People Magazine. “Once it was all set up I realized there were thousands of dollars worth of stuff out here and I couldn’t sleep. I’d come and patrol.” The doors opened at 8 a.m. with some food for shopping thought. Greenwich native, my sister and CEO of Treskoi Public Relations organized not only my participation in the event but coordinated a little breakfast bite from Buttercream Cupcakes & Coffee, flown in from Coral Gables, Fla.

News travels fast– any story that takes longer than two minutes to tell is over before it starts. I should know I made my living telling stories as news reporter. My compensation was humble, but the experience was priceless. The best interviews come from reporters that are able to get to the truth of the story faster then others. Before anyone will tell you anything, it necessary for that person to trust you– to trust you are going to retell their story without bias. That is what drew me to reporting, my natural ability to bond with others. I considered it a gift, and I used to make a difference in the community. One day it could be as simple as giving a bargaining tip and the next day I could be at police headquarters pressuring police to solve a murder. Reporting will always be my passion, and in my heart. I found however, that there is more then one way to connect to people. As the daughter of the dynamic decorating duo Betsy & Robert Knapp, I laughingly say that I am genetically predisposed for creating beautiful accessories and living spaces. With a touch of their guidance and drawing on my inspirations, I created my decorative pillow collection, Samantha Knapp Atelier at Maisonettestore.com. Design gives me the chance to bond with clients on a personal level and build a partnership. Together we craft their living space that expresses my client’s personality and best vision of themselves. The idea for my book came as a natural progression-interactions with people..sprinkled with a few lessons torn from the pages of my “Sex in The City”. I have kissed a lot of frogs sitting on bachelor pads and am still searching for my prince in a “modern-day” castle. Though tough at times, I love the journey of being single. It is a time to celebrate. It is a time to be free of boundaries but not free of good taste. I hope it brings just as much enjoyment, smiles and helpful tidbits as it did to write it. What’s next?
