FAIRWAY MARKET: 699 CANAL STREET, STAMFORD
11/3/2010
Fairway opened today in Stamford with speeches from politicians and developers. I snuck past the crowd and headed inside where the good stuff is.
The city’s newest supermarket seems to live up to the hype — it’s just as good at the company’s stores in New York. Actually, it’s kind of amazing.
And yeah, that dude is holding a shark.

Fairway prices are higher than SAhopRite
Make a beeline for the display of insane olive oil selections… grab a slice of crusty bread and sample the 16 or 20 sampling olive oils and tapenades they have out there. And do not miss the “artichoke cream” from Italy. I tried to translate the bottle. Looks like the only ingredients are artichokes, garlic, olive oil and sea salt. Addictive.
How were the prices on the produce?
I found it to be more like Stew Leonard’s. A limited flyer with several items priced really well and everything else priced higher then your traditional grocery store. They’ll take more business from Stew’s then Shoprite.
Do the prices seem comparable to Grade A/Shoprite?
I was there yesterday for lunch. The place was very busy, but manageable. The hot bar has some great choices. I had some roast veggies and stuffed cabbage. The stuffed cabbage was really, really good. Their fruit, vegetable, and cheese sections are also remarkable. Oh, and I had a store-made black and white cookie that was one of the best I’ve ever had.
EKim: I got a few staples and ciabatta, serrano ham, speck and pecorino. Also a package of flat iron steak and made some great fajitas for $5.
I visited the store yesterday and is a place to see and shop. I never seen a Food Store like this. Great for Stamford. They are going to be great neighbors .
Welcome to Stamford Fairway.
So what did you buy?
