Is Stamford getting a real New York-style kosher deli?
According to the real estate website CoStar Group, you’ll be able to grab a pastrami on rye and a Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray at 108 Prospect Street later this year:
Court Square Cafe had held a lease there for many years, but finally closed its doors last year. The new owner plans on opening a Kosher, NY-Style deli in late spring or late summer of 2011. (Read more)
This isn’t the only change on Prospect, which recently saw the opening of Key Foods market last month in a space formerly occupied by a Family Dollar store.

Thanks for the update, @ghostofantricklaiber. I gotta check this out. Sometimes I think if I ever moved away from New York how much I would miss pastrami. And right on about the cheese. I’be been asked at my corner (non-kosher) deli if I want cheese or lettuce on my pastrami sandwich and I looked at them as if their head was not on straight. Pastrami, rye, mustard. Period.
Well, this joint is open as of tonight. I drove by and didn’t recognize the joint. Looks like they gutted the place and started over. It’s called Kosh, and yes, it is kosher. Closed on Saturdays too for the sabbath. I checked the website, http://www.itskosh.com and they appear to specialize in Montreal smoked meat, something you cannot even get in NYC. Montreal bagels are great, but not unique when compared with the NYC greats like Ess-a-Bagel, but if these guys get Montreal smoked meat right, people will be driving from miles around to get some. I hope this place succeeds. Part locally owned by the guy who owns Coldstone on High Ridge.
FINALLY!!!! YES YES YES!!! This is great news. The last Jewish deli in Stamford that I can remember was I think in Ridgeway shopping center when I was a kid.
This Deli will be a BLOCKBUSTER DELI !! I HEAR SPORTS BAR TOO…with tv’s kosher wings etc…….can’t wait folks !!
Nice for picking up my mention of the deli, Chris.
The property is still owned by the Loglisci family.
Lucy Loglisci began there with soft ice cream stand, a photo of which was displayed in the foyer of the thankfully defunct phony recent diner there.
The ice cream stand became Lucy’s Diner. It grew and grew again. As her sons aged, it became JR’s – named for John and Ralph – and was an outstanding venue for a good steak, excellent Italian cooking, great jazz and a bar where you had to wait for a seat.
The Loglisci family got out of the business, leased the location to David Cingari, followed by several other efforts, none of which could even match Cingari.
Yes, a group from Manhattan is opening a deli. Kosher or kosher style I am not sure. But we certainly deserve better than the fake operations now in town. Stamford could also support a nice apetizing operation, and please, a good Jewish bakery! (I miss Karp’s and New York Bakeries.)
Chris, I’ve heard rumblings in Stamford’s jewish community about this. There hasn’t been a kosher deli in this town in over two decades when Stamfordites could enjoy the real deal at Deli Land on High Ridge (a few doors down from Mario’s) and Sam Greenblott’s joint (Star Delicatessen?) in Bull’s Head. I am salivating for a pastrami/corned beef/tongue combo. By the way, the sandwich in your accompanying pic wouldn’t fly. You won’t find cheese on the sandwiches in a kosher joint.
