Stamford slices shine on national pizza list

by:

When New York Magazine waded through hundreds of pizzas to name the best in the nation, they saved a spot for Stamford on the coveted Top 101 list.

The magazine recently released a list of the top pizzas in the country for several different kinds of pizza. From deep-dish, New York style, new wave, thin crust and everything in between, the magazine named the top pies in 11 different categories, adding Stamford-based Colony Grille to the top of the thin crust category in a move that, frankly, doesn’t surprise us.

Here’s what they had to say about our city’s most famous pie:

Hot Oil Pizza

Colony Grill

Stamford, Connecticut

“You can’t help but respect a place that only has one thing on the menu. That’s the case at the Colony Grill, where cracker-thin pizza is the only choice. You can pick your toppings, but the only real decision to make is whether you want that pizza with or without the place’s signature chile-infused hot oil. You want it with.”

And Stamford was in good company; in addition to pies from Brooklyn, St. Louis, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, and other cities famous for their near-perfect pizzas, Frank Pepe’s and Sally’s Apizza in New Haven were also named to the top thin crust pizzas.

Stew Leonard and son embroiled in lawsuit

by:

Above: Stew Leonard’s on Federal Road in Danbury.

A story brewing today doesn’t have much to do with food, but it relates to one of Connecticut’s largest food magnates.

Stew Leonard Sr., founder of the animatronic-filled Connecticut grocery chain, and his son, Thomas Leonard, are being sued by the wife of a former Westport home builder who died after being washed off Leonard’s 70-foot powerboat, “Stew’s Special,” in the Caribbean last year.

In the lawsuit filed Wednesday, Barbara Speranza claims her husband, Robert Speranza, 73, died as the result of reckless and negligent behavior on the part of Leonard and his son.

Leonard Sr., in turn, says the boat was hit by a 12- to 15-foot “rogue wave” that “came out of nowhere” while the men were about a mile offshore Virgin Gorda in the British Islands.

This isn’t the first time the octogenarian has found himself in court. In 1993, Stew Leonard Sr. was convicted of committing tax fraud through a scheme to divert more than $17 million in cash register receipts over a ten-year period. He ultimately served several years in prison.

It’s NOT 1992 at Garden Catering

by:

UPDATE: Unfortunately, due to some incorrect information in a press release, it turns out that this special was earlier this month, not this week.

However, the $2 donations to the Junior United Way are ongoing.

The LBC sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience!

This week only, Garden Catering is offering 1992 prices on select “popular items” in celebration the stalwart Old Greenwich deli’s 20th anniversary.

Which raises the question, what did a high school special cost in 1992?

Also this week, the deli promises to donate $2 to the Jr. United Way for each new Facebook fan, Twitter follower or “loyalty member,” a status that begets frequent customers “nugget points” with an “I heart nuggets” card.

Looking to complete the time warp? How about cuing up that ipod to Sir Mix-A-Lot, whose “Baby Got Back” topped the charts in 1992.

New delivery service comes to Lower Fairfield County

by:

Want bartaco for dinner without having to deal with the overcrowded bar? There’s a way to do that now.

A new delivery service just opened up in Lower Fairfield County, giving residents the ability to order delivery food from city restaurants that don’t actually offer delivery. According to its website, GoWaiter.com ships out food from more than a dozen Stamford restaurants, including bartaco, Bobby V’s, Mary Ann’s and Tengda. There’s also a variety of options in Westport, Norwalk and other local towns.

Here’s how it works: GoWaiter tacks on a $3.99 delivery fee for online orders and $4.99 for phone orders, so the website is your best bet. Enter your zipcode and your options will pop up. Just place your order like you regularly would through other services and wait an average of 45 to 55 minutes for delivery.

Voila. Tacos on your couch.

Finding love at Fairway

Talk about taking catering to the next level. Fairway went all-out to accommodate one Stamford bachelor, who worked with the store to coordinate a sneak-attack proposal on his lovely lady.

BARCELONA WINE BAR: 222 SUMMER ST., STAMFORD

5/30/2009

The lone torero, stoic, motionlessly taunting his prize, stood printed on a banner in front of 222 Summer St. for months, similarly beguiling passersby eager for what was to come: tapas and Spanish wine.

Barcelona Wine Bar has establishments in virtually every other city with a sizable population in Fairfield County, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before they expanded into Stamford. The Spanish tapas restaurant officially opened yesterday and has taken over a space on lower Summer St. which has seen something of a transformation in the last few months.

The restaurant features a large central, u-shaped bar and several booths with additional seating in front and on the street-side patio. A small dining room is also available for more traditional, quieter dining.

Barcelona carries over their chic, modern decor, accented with photography depicting the ritualized art of corrida, bullfighting being a central visual theme of the restaurant group.

Diners familiar with the other restaurants will also find the menu nearly identical, ranging from charcuteria plates, salads, full entrees and, of course, tapas, the main draw.

After deciding on a pitcher of sangria we went with a charcuteria plate [Manchego, chorizo and Jamon Serrano], anchovies with garlic and olive oil, tuna tartare, mussels and a plate of olives. I wouldn’t say we found ordering difficult, but there is a lot to choose from and it all sounds fantastic.

The mussels were a perfect garlicky, bacony dish and the tuna tartare is prepared with just the right amount of citrus and capers to contrast with the fish and olive oil. The fresh, marinated anchovies were my favorite – owing to their simplicity – drenched in garlic and olive oil, eaten alone or with warm bread.

Barcelona’s vast array of tempting menu options guarantees we will be back. Next time, hopefully, with a better understanding of the wine list.

FRESHLY BREWED: NYC MUGGED

by:

5/28/2009

The newly-launched site NYC Mugged, dedicated to quality coffee in New York, is yet another example that New York’s specialty coffee scene is flourishing.

The site offers a searchable database of coffee locations, reviews and short features, like where to find a cup of Stumptown, which made its East Coast debut last year.

Even if searching out the perfect double ristretto, cortado or seven-ounce cappuccino isn’t your idea of a perfect day in New York, there may be something here for you.
