tip toe through the tulips

Actually, they’re daffodils…but I’ll get back to that.

Check it out, this past Saturday, April 16th, over fifty volunteers comprised of residents, business owners, and community members pitched in for a Spring clean up of Downtown and guess what….they collected 3000 lbs of garbage in two hours! 1.5 tons of trash.  OMG! that’s unbelievable.

blondes really do have more fun

Remember when Hilary said it takes a village?  I do.  My liberal parents loved it, my republican boss hated it and at the time, I didn’t even understand it.  It honestly took my having Charlotte to fully get the big picture.  The more people we have getting involved on behalf of the greater good, the better equipped we are to achieve greatness.  I wasn’t a part of it this year, I was in Hershey Park fighting for my life on a roller coaster way to big for me and Charlotte to have gone on and then I finished up the weekend at my mom’s house for Passover.  I sat across from my Uncle Stan at the Seder table.  Watching him eat a turkey leg was like watching the Blue’s Traveler guy play harmonica but that’s a story for a different day.

We talked about it this morning at the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting and as Gail put it, many hands equal lighter work.  I never heard that before and like it.  From Gail:

Thank you BCC Downtown Spring CleanTeam – consisting of Kris Lorch, Paul Timpanelli, Erin McDonough, Bob Abbate, Nancy Hadley, and Gail Solis.  We had about 50 volunteers from the downtown residents, Trefz Corp, Citibank, Build Onhigh-school students, mayoral candidate Mary Jane Foster, Caryn Kaufman, Ben Henson, Angie Staltaro, the DSSD crew and other interested persons.  Appearance made by Charlie Carroll (Parks Dept) and Mayor Bill Finch.  Several other clean-ups also took place simultaneously in the City.

Even though it was cold and damp, volunteers stuck to it and cleaned areas on Water St Train/Bus Station, Rte 25 on–off ramp on Ffld Ave, the Library grounds, Lafayette Blvd islands, and the tornado area on Main St around Davidsons.  What a way to spend a Saturday morning in downtown Bridgeport!!  Way to go folks.  THANK YOU!

Speaking of the Chamber, if you are not familiar with Kris Lorch, she is AMAZING.  Kris is the President and CEO of Alloy Engineering, a Bridgeport based company over on Seaview Avenue since 1958.  They make something called Thermowells over there and as she said this morning, none of us in the room will probably ever need one but none the less, she is the real deal.  She is incredibly brilliant, very beautiful, and just seems to understand everything.  I totally dig her and for sure in Bridgeport we are super lucky to have her.

Back to the flowers.  My favorite guys over at public facilities have been hard at work.  In addition to supporting the Spring Clean up with the trash collecting, they did an incredible job over at McLevy Green mulching up the flower beds, reseeding the grass and getting the park ready for what will be a jam packed Season of Fun.

The daffodils are in full bloom and just in time for the Mayor and his Green team to unveil a Big Belly solar powered trash compactor in honor of Earth day.  The Mounted Unit stood by as the new garbage smoosher was commissioned.  Pretty cool stuff.  We watch the garbage pails across the street fill up really quickly, especially on a beautiful sunny day like today.  Anything to keep that stuff in check is just fine by me.  I’ll keep you posted on how it works.

And finally, the Bennifer project is in effect (forgive me, I couldn’t help it.)  As you know, Ben Henson and I go Downtown Thursdays Concert series crazy and in the first week of the money drive, GDC came in with an incredible $2000 sponsorship.  Let me tell you, between the Officer Courtesy Program, the new leases signed, and the community support, the GDC peeps have really stepped up their game.  I’m happy to see it and equally as happy to support them.

We also have incredibly generous confirmed pledges from Peoples United, Forstone Capital (can I get a woo woo), DSSD, not to mention a host of others who have said they would take part.  Of course, we would love and appreciate all the help we can get to make this year’s events a knock out.  The call to Artists will be going out soon and I saw a sneak peak of the website and it’s groovy c/o Bananaland over at The Arcade.  Stay tuned on the concerts, there’s more great news to come.

Last but certainly not least, please enjoy this video of super baby singing Popular from Wicked….I love my Charlotte.

ps…to the guys walking the picket line over at the Bud Beer distributor in Orange, I support you.

pps…Happy Passover and Easter.

love, jen

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we’re all OK
And not to worry ’cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won’t be made useless
I won’t be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear
My hands are small, I know
But they’re not yours, they are my own
But they’re not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
Poverty stole your golden shoes
It didn’t steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn’t ever after
We’ll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what’s right
‘Cause where there’s a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing
My hands are small I know
But they’re not yours, they are my own
But they’re not yours, they are my own
I am never broken
In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
My hands are small I know
But they’re not yours, they are my own
But they’re not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
My hands are small I know
But they’re not yours, they are my own
But they’re not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
We are never broken

Hands, Jewel
