Bridgeport Theatre Company has a new home and me and Charlotte are moving in, but I’ll get back to that.
Whew, long time no see, well speak. Back to school and back to midnight blogging. You know I don’t take time off for any specific reason, more so I choose to write when I’m inspired and while I certainly found this Downtown event packed summer inspiring, I found being lazy at night just a bit more. But sure enough with the breeze of September I’ve been feeling like catching up with my laptop and friends on the other end of these stories and then this morning like a lightning bolt I knew it was the right time.
Charlotte was in the shower and clad in my bathrobe with coffee in hand, I sat down and asked her if her teacher (FIRST GRADE!) had talked to her class about 9/11 while the names of those lost were being read in the background from the tv in my bathroom. Here’s how the conversation ensued:
Mommy: Baby, did your teacher tell you about September 11?
Char: Do you mean the dates and months? Yes.
Mommy: No I mean about the bad stuff that happened that day?
Char: Like the hurricane?
Mommy: No baby, when the bad people came.
To which she answered no. So I started to talk to her about how the world is made up of hundreds of different countries and how the nice thing about each different place is that there is different food, and different toys, and different languages, and sometime the people even look different. She plays a game on my iPhone where you can make an international buffet so she totally gets the concept of countries and their individual identities. I then told her how the best thing about our country, The United States of America, is that we are free.
Mommy: Do you remember what I told you it was to be free?
Char: Yes to run around and have fun and play and be yourself:
Mommy: Yes, as long as you don’t hurt anyone. Well in America we have rights and freedoms. We can like who we want, dress how we want, say what we want, and believe in what we want. Sometimes there are people who don’t like that part. They feel we should only think and feel the way they do especially when it comes to god. Ten years ago today some very bad people came to America and hurt a lot of people to prove that point.
Char: Mommy did you get hurt?
Mommy: Only my heart honey. Do you remember when I talked to you about the troops and the veterans?
Char: Like Garrett and Isa and Minnie and Big Bob?
Mommy: Exactly. Well the troops are the brave men and women that protect me and you and our Country. They fight to make sure that even if bad people come here to try and hurt us they will never be able to take away what makes America so beautiful and that’s our freedoms. So it’s really important that no matter what, you always use those rights that the troops are fighting for. You have be yourself, and vote (we’ve been talking a lot about voting and elections, it’s silly season you know) and believe in what you want, and love who you want.
Char: Mommy are you going to cry?
Mommy: Yes Charlotte because it’s very important to me that you understand what we are talking about. You must be very proud to be an American.
Char: Don’t cry mommy, don’t worry. If those bad people ever come back I’m going to punch them in the face and kick them in the penis.
Well, she clearly didn’t learn those tactics from me, I’m a lover not a fighter, but I certainly echo the sentiment. Out of the mouth of babes, her clarity is so empowering. So with all that I have to teach her, she teaches me just the same…life does go on and you can’t stop the beat.
Speaking of which…HAIRSPRAY!
Bridgeport Theatre Company has launched it’s second season and have taken up residence at Bridgeport’s Downtown Cabaret Theatre! If you’re not familiar, BTC had an incredible first season with hits like Doubt and Suessical the Musical. They started off this season with a jam packed Hooray for Hollywood fundraiser in which Charlotte played Shirley Temple.
The first show of the season is Hairspray and Charlotte is lucky enough to be part of the cast. The show will be running from October 21st -November 6th and tickets are on-sale now, click here to purchase!.
Rehearsals started today and I can tell you the cast is AMAZING! This is a show you will not want to miss. If you came to the DOOWOP night of Downtown Thursdays, the series of which was such a huge success this summer, you would have been lucky enough to catch a sneak peek of some of the fabulous song and dance numbers and I can promise you just from what I saw today, the real show will be a spectacular! I’ll keep you posted as the show goes on.
So much more happened this summer that we need to catch up on but let’s do that tomorrow. Today let’s just honor, remember, and pledge to be brave and move on.
It feels good to be back with you. Now let’s all enjoy some movies about our incredible troops and their dogs.
God Bless America, land that I love.
A woman found out if she shook it
She could shake up a man
And so i’m gonna shake and shimmy it
The best that i can today
The motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna
But i never ask why
I’m gonna spit in your eye and say
That you cant stop the beat!
