Hints of Style

Ideas for what, when and wear

Peace.

by:

I always seem to be the last one awake in my house on Christmas Eve. After the extended family leaves and the table is cleaned, I really enjoy sitting on the sofa looking at and admiring our decorated tree. Even though I know its been in the family room for almost 2 weeks now, somehow I seem to overlook its beauty more often than I care to admit. It, the tree that is, has a way of bringing a smile to all our faces every time we walk into the room.

I think that’s why this woman who lived up the street from our previous home in Hoboken, NJ kept her tree up all year long.
Just to make her smile.

I do hope it was artificial…

Here’s a few to make you smile!
Enjoy a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, and any other holiday you might celebrate and cherish.

Under the Wire

by:

Each holiday season I find myself stumped for ideas on someone’s gift.
Last year I didn’t know what to get my octogenarian mom who has, as she says, “everything she needs in life”….my dad.
This year the problem was my 20 year old nephew. I didn’t want to gift a money card – not that there’s anything wrong with money, especially when you’re 20 years old! But ever since my nephews were little I tried to find a present that was a bit more creative. One year it was a pair of Radio Flyers. Another year it was personalized wooden baseball bats made at a woodworking shop in Norwalk.

I still haven’t found come up with an idea as of yet, but I still have 96 more hours!

Here are a few creative, last minute ideas for that person on your list…

The Benefit of Benefit

by:

Just when you thought the crowds were headed to the malls and the highways, think again.

They’re heading to Benefit.

Benefit cosmetics was started in 1976 by twin sisters, Jean and Jane Ford, from Indiana. They opened their first boutique in San Francisco and, to date, they have 34 stores with more opening soon.
They sell make-up, skincare, and fragrances as well as offer services such as brow shaping, eyelash tinting, and body waxing. There are tons of uniquely packaged products with creative names such as the POREfessional – a balm to minimize the appearance or pores, and Watt’s Up – a highlighter for you face.

When I popped in yesterday, the store was filled with women and soon-to-be-women being beautified in every way. The staff is fabulous and knowledgable…and ever so patient!
Anything inside the boutique makes a terrific gift for the holidays…so you might want to add it to your own list!

As their own tag line reads…”Its like a candy store for grown-up girlies.”

P.J.’s

by:

I know it sounds crazy, but my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas…
…and I responded, “Pajamas.”

He laughed and said, “No, really.”
…and I responded, “Really.”

I never seem to look for and buy myself anything cozy to wear to bed at night. Usually I just reach into my husband’s drawer for one of his freshly washed undershirts and off to sleep I go.
For some reason, this year I wanted to break away from the XL Hanes and try a S in something more feminine!

This is what I suggested…

tree skirt

by:

With the sun shining and only 2 weeks remaining until Christmas, this seemed the perfect weekend to find and decorate our tree.
The “stars lined up” for us from the start…
-we found a wonderful looking Douglas Fir within minutes of our arrival.
-every strand of lights from the previous year shined brightly on the first try.
-CVS was having a “buy 1, get 1 free” sale for the extra two boxes of clear whites we needed.

After our the last ornament was carefully positioned in the best location on an empty branch, we sat back and admired our accomplishment. It glistened beautifully as it does every year.

But something was missing.

My son added some water to the dish on the stand and said, “Don’t we usually put some round thing under here?”

The tree skirt…which made me think of a-line skirts…which made me think I should write about them when everyone was tucked into bed.

Again and Again

by:

Versatile: having or capable of many uses.

I love that word.

I use a golf tee to hold up my hair in a bun for spin class.
I use a heart shaped rock my son found when he was 4 as a sponge holder on the kitchen counter.
I take day-too-old raspberries and add them to my margaritas.

And I wear each of my only 2 little black dresses in many different ways.
‘Tis the season for this type of versatility!

The Cold Shoulder

by:

I vividly remember, back in the mid ’90s, Giorgio Armani visiting our Manhattan offices. During one of the discussions regarding his new collection, he mentioned how a woman’s collar bone and shoulder were such a sensual part of her body. He continued on stating that he enjoyed designing dresses and tops that accentuated this positive part to further enhance her appearance.

Try one of these subtly, sexy styles this holiday season…

The Vest Quest

by:

I was outside playing ball with my dog, Chili, this morning and despite it was “chill-ier” than usual, it still didn’t feel like a December day.
And yes, I do remember the snowstorm in October, but it seems as though our Fall this year has been quite mild.
When running around during the day, I find myself tossing on a vest instead of a heavier, more cumbersome jacket with sleeves.
Layer a sweater underneath a shearling lined version and it will actually be warm enough on some colder days to come.
Unless they just don’t come this year…
