Mixing It Up

A closer look at cultural diversity

Please don’t let him be Black…

When I hear that a suicide bomber, a serial killer, or a home invader has committed one of their heinous crimes, sometimes I think to myself, “I hope they weren’t Black.”

It’s not that their Blackness would make the crime any less horrible, but Black people have enough negative stereotypes associated with them, and we don’t need another one.

Many people think like me.

People of other races have told me they have the same thoughts about criminals in regards to their own ethnicities. “Please don’t let him be one of us.”

I asked my colleague, a White woman, if White people hope that certain crimes weren’t committed by other White people.

Her response: “No, we say ‘They probably were Black.’”
