Applebee’s calls police on family with ‘overly active’ kids

A Texas couple must have missed my recent blog post with tips on dining out with kids. Eli Gau and Lillian Maliti were at an Applebee’s in Katy, Texas, with their sons Ryan, 3, and Ethan, 1, last Sunday night, when the restaurant manager called the police because the children were “overly active.”

Gau admitted to KHOU11 News Houston that his boys are high-energy, but he felt their behavior in the restaurant was typical of kids.

The father said the dinner was going well until his oldest son started to wander around and the manager told him the children were making too much noise. The manager called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to complain. Gau in turn called the police to say that he felt threatened. A deputy arrived on the scene and gave the family a citizen’s information card, according to Alan Bernstein, the director of public affairs for the sheriff’s office.

“I feel heartbroken” about what happened, Gau told the news station.

“I feel disrespected,” his wife, Maliti, added. “This has never happened in my life.”

Applebee’s apologized to the family for the management’s behavior, but some diners who were present at the restaurant say the family was out of line.

“This child was not wandering around,” Randall Smith, who claims he was at the restaurant, wrote on the KHOU11 Facebook wall. “He was running around the restaurant screaming at guests as they tried to enjoy their meals.”

(Note: SFGate reached out to Smith and will report back if we get additional information on the incident from him.)
