President Obama gets zapped by Spider-Man

Obama meets Spider-Man. (Pete Souza / White House)

The Republicans aren’t cooperating on the budget, gun control, you name it. Nothing is going quite as planned. President Barack Obama might be Time magazine’s Man of the Year but these days he seems to be caught in a web.

Today he expressed his tangled situation with humor by posting a photo on Facebook of a kid dressed up as Spider-Man zapping him with imaginary webs (or more accurately, Obama’s social media team got creative and picked this fitting image).

“President Obama gets caught in Spider-Man’s web,” the post on the President’s “wall” reads.

The photo quickly went viral and now has over a half-million Facebook likes. News organizations from CBS to the Washington Post picked up the photo.

The image of Obama playing with a staffer’s son was taken on October 26 by White House photographer Pete Souza, but the public saw it for the first time in Time magazine’s special Man of the Year issue.

While the photo might be a metaphor for the way the president is feeling these days, it’s also an example of our president’s playful spirit and it shows his admirable knack for charming children. Throughout the Obama Presidency photographers have captured many moments when Barack is being adorable with adorable children. Here’s a look at some of the best photos.

Are presidential candidates’ kids fair game in campaign attacks?

Obama kids off limits rick santorum

This week Rick Santorum criticized President Obama for sending his 13-year-old daughter to Mexico on a class trip. Obama responded by saying that his parenting choices should be off-limits on the campaign trail.

Malia Obama took a school trip to Mexico—and Republican presidential Rick Santorum doesn’t approve. Earlier this week Santorum said that Obama is setting a bad example by putting his 13-year-old daughter on a plane to Mexico after the State Department issued a travel warning for U.S. travelers considering a trip to Mexico.

“What I would say is that the president’s actions should reflect what his administration is saying,” Santorum said in a phone interview with conservative radio talk show host Glenn Beck. “If the administration is saying that it’s not safe to have people down there, then just because you can send 25 Secret Service agents doesn’t mean you should do it… And when the government is saying this is not safe, then you don’t set the example by sending your kids down there.”

President Barack Obama was outraged by Santorum’s comments and his deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter told MSNBC, “I think that children, for candidate purposes, have always been off-limits in presidential campaigns, and really any campaign.

“I’m surprised that Rick Santorum wouldn’t agree with that.”

Malia’s trip was educational and she and her classmates from Washington D.C.’s Sidwell Friends volunteered at an orphanage and visited archeological sites. The trip was kept quiet by the White House press office until an earthquake shook Mexico City and the Obamas decided to issue a statement saying that Malia was safe and unharmed.

The situation brings up the question, Are presidential candidates’ kids fair game on the campaign trail? It seems unfair to turn children into political pawns but at the same time when you’re running for president you can’t expect your personal life to be kept private. What do you think should kids be off-limits on the campaign trail?
