Pilot study finds chiropractic care, physical therapy may reduce costs

With today’s health care debate raging on, I found this information of real value, especially while our President and others are saying we must use what works. Once again, I didn’t write this, but sometimes its not about what I say, but what everybody is saying. The more we all stay informed with facts, the better decisions we can all make. Pilot study finds chiropractic care, physical therapy may reduce costs
Individuals with musculoskeletal disorders who received chiropractic care or physical therapy had lower health care costs and were less likely to have surgery than employees who did not receive those services, according to a recent report.

The findings come from a one-year pilot program designed by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield to measure patient quality of care. Researchers concluded that significant clinical outcomes and health care cost reductions were attributable to the use of chiropractic and other physical medicine services. Overall, 89 percent of all individuals receiving physical medicine services reported improvement of at least 30 percent within 30 days.
The 2008 pilot — an ongoing quality improvement program for Iowa and South Dakota physical medicine providers — analyzed data on care provided by 238 chiropractors, physical therapists and occupational therapists to 5,500 Wellmark members with MSDs. Wellmark utilized Triad Healthcare to help administer the program and collaborated with the company to collect data and measure outcomes. Triad also analyzed the chiropractic and physical therapy utilization data for the pilot and has continued to administer the program in 2009.

Supporters of chiropractic treatment praised the findings, saying that the cost-effectiveness of the method has been documented in several studies.
Glenn Manceaux, president of the American Chiropractic Association, pointed to a study published in a 2005 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that found chiropractic and medical care have comparable costs for treating chronic low-back pain, with chiropractic care producing significantly better outcomes. In addition, a study published in a 2003 edition of Spine medical journal found that manual manipulation provides better short-term relief of chronic spinal pain than a variety of medications, he said.
“Especially during the health care reform debate, it’s important that chiropractic and other conservative care methods are taken into serious consideration as a cost-effective alternative to the utilization of expensive surgery and hospital-based care,” he said

  1. Dr. Nathanson.

I think this is a great discussion. Many people are uninformed as to how much benefit chiropractic care can be for alot of different ailments. As a Maryland based chiropractor, my first objective is to obviously educate my patients so that they may be more informed as to what conditions chiropractic therapy can treat as appose to undergoing surgery.

This post is definitely a good eye opener for the community. Keep up the good work.

  2. If the American Government (and to a certain extent Canadian Government) is truly serious about restructuring, then a study like this should absolutely be considered. I’ve passed this on to a number of colleagues. Thanks for the post.

  5. Chiropractic treatment is one of the best methods for treating numerous health problems naturally. After years of experience being a chiropractor, I have found that it is a powerful way to solve many pain conditions, like headaches, neck pain and back pain, as well as many non-pain condition as well, such as fatigue, sleep problems, and sinus problems.

  6. I found it interesting that the study was done by one of the major insurance companies (Blue Cross Blue Shield). I remember a time not so long ago when most insurance companies didn’t even cover chiropractic care. I’m sure studies would also show that more chiropractic patients are health and exercise conscious than those that only seek health advise from medical doctors. Thanks for the great article.

  8. I’m actually British but living in the USA (Reno).
Years ago I did an audit and reckoned in one decade alone I had saved the British health service around $1,000,000 (1982 prices, would be a lot more today).
For a healthcare system quaking under the weight of dross and techno-pseudoscience (Pharma), you’d think they’d have the wits to espouse stuff that’s safe and cheap. Duh! Instead they try and run everybody out of town.
Who is kidding who? and more to the point, why?

  10. A few lifestyle changes can improve our nation’s health and save our country a lot of money: Eat less food. Eat healthier food. Exercise. Don’t smoke. Get adjusted by your chiropractor. These simple lifestyle choices all have a positive long-term impact on your health and would drastically reduce the cost of nation’s health-care.
