Report: New Canaan one of Connecticut’s 20 safest towns

New Canaan is the eighth safest town in Connecticut, according to Safe Choice Security’s comparison of crime statistics in the state.

The report is based on the 2012 FBI Crime Statistics and a comparison of data on property and violent crime rates around Connecticut. Ridgefield is ranked first, Weston second and Darien third.

The statistics show New Canaan also is safer than 89 percent of U.S. towns and cities. Despite its proximity to New York state, the town “is surprisingly safe,” the report states.

“It also has a high cost of living like its neighboring cities. Popular with wealthy commuters, the city is listed as the 5th most affluent in the nation,” according to the report. “A dedicated police force ensures that crime rates remain low so that New Canaan continues to attract wealthy residents who enjoy the upscale shopping and restaurants offered there.”

For every 10,000 residents, the violent crimes rate in New Canaan is 0.11 while the property crime rate is 6.34, the report shows.
