Route 58 closing tonight in Bethel

BETHEL — Route 58 will be closed for a few days beginning tonight while work is done on a bridge near the Redding town line.

The bridge over Putnam Brook will be removed and replaced, a project that necessitates the closure of the turnpike from Friday at 6 p.m. until Tuesday at 6 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

A flashing electric sign on Route 302 near downtown Bethel advises motorists to seek alternate routes. A detour that will go in effect tonight will direct vehicles from Route 58 to Route 53 then onto Route 107 and eventually back onto Route 58 south of the closure.

Here’s the DOT’s release on the project:

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the Route 58 bridge over Putnam Brook near the intersection of Sara’s Way, will be removed and replaced requiring the closure of Route 58 beginning Friday at 6 p.m. September 20, through Tuesday 6 a.m. September 24, 2013.

The project consists of removal of Bridge No. 02402 that carries Route 58, Putnam Park Road, over Putnam Brook in Bethel. The work includes the removal of the existing stone masonry culvert, installation of a precast concrete box culvert and wing walls, along with new drainage and pavement.
DOT Project No. 0009-0094 was awarded to Waters Construction Company from Bridgeport, CT at a cost of $ 772,766.00 on April 2, 2013, and is scheduled to be completed in September 2013.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 58 will be closed between Hoyts Hill Road and Saras Way from 6 p.m. Friday September 20 until 6 a.m. Tuesday September 24, 2013.
Motorists will be detoured from Putnam Park Road (Route 58) at Milwaukee Avenue (Route 302) onto Glassy Plain Road/Redding Road (Route 53) to Hill Road/Lonetown Road (Route 107) and back onto Putnam Park Road (Route 58). Detour signs will direct motorists around the closure.
