At about 11 a.m. Monday, the Newtown High School and Newtown Middle School were required to do a modified lockdown procedure after police contacted the schools related to a concern about an issue with a parent.
Interim Schools Superintendent John Reed said in this particular procedure, a “lock-in drill,” the perimeters of the schools are closed, but normal class and other internal school activities continue. The procedure was in place until just about 11:45 a.m. A message was forwarded to parents to inform them, and assure them that their students were safe.
A dispatcher at the Police Department said there was no public information officer immediately available to provide details about the lockdown.
“We’re sorry when this is necessary, but if we’re advised by the police it’s a wise decision, we’re going to pay close attention to that,” Reed stated.
