Danbury High hosts diabetes fund raiser June 7

On Saturday, June 7, more than a dozen WIFFLE©ball teams will compete on the ball fields at Danbury High School for competitive fun and to raise funds for SLAMDiabetes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping improve the lives of those with Type 1 diabetes through games and sports.
The Western Connecticut Classic 2014 will begin at 9 a.m. at the school at 43 Clapboard Ridge Road.
The games will be played like baseball in miniature stadiums modeled after the fields where the professionals play.
The Danbury High School Captains Council and SLAMDiabetes have teamed up to organize the tournament, which is slated to raise $36,000.
So far, the teams have raised more than $11,500. With more than 15,000 diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, the mission of SLAMDiabetes is to help improve the lives of children and adults living with the illness. Funds raised are used for, among other things, camperships, educational programs and support.
Among the teams playing Saturday are the DHS softball team, Broadview Bombers, New Milford Chaos and the Sherman School. Community supporters are encouraged to come and root on the players. Each team of nine players will play two to three games plus the playoffs and championship games, if they qualify. There are seven innings per game of 30-35 mph pitch ball using speed guns.
The event will also include a Home Run Derby, special guests and kids game or sponsors game.
