Sandy Hook students won’t return to school until after winter break

The students of Sandy Hook Elementary School will not return to class until after winter break.

When they do return to school, it will be at Chalk Hill School in neighboring Monroe.

Volunteers and local officials have been working to prepare the school to meet the needs of elementary school students. It was closed last year by the Monroe Board of Education.

The office of Monroe Superintendent of Schools James Agostine, said the date to reopen the school will be after Jan. 1, but an exact date hasn’t been set. The decision on when Chalk Hill will open will be decided by Newtown school officials.

Monroe police Lt. Brian McCauley said officials from his department and other in town are working to make sure that the school is safe and ready for students when Newtown officials are ready to send teachers and students there.
