Businesses offer discounts, freebies to families after shooting

It has been a difficult — immeasurably so — several days after the shootings at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, and some businesses are providing ways for children and families to take their mind off the tragedy for awhile.

The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk will offer free admission to children on Saturday, “simply with the hope that children and families can have a place to feel normal and have fun,” spokesman Dave Sigworth said.

And in Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo will open its doors to children for free from Wednesday through Friday next week, while most area school districts are on break.

The zoo and its 52 acres of parkland “invites families to spend quality time together following the tragic events of last week,” spokeswoman Caryn Kaufman said.
