The 37th SoNo Arts Celebration will be taking place Aug. 3, 4 and 5 in South Norwalk. The SoNo Arts Celebration is a non-profit gala that boasts a line-up of artists and performers to an audience of more than 60,000 patrons.
“We are counting down to another great year of SoNo Arts. This year rings in the 37th year of a tradition in which the streets of downtown South Norwalk come alive — with amazing fine artists, food choices and kid’s activities, and an ever-improving lineup of musical offerings,” Tom Grin, festival director, said.
“I’m honored to introduce SoNo’s first-ever international artist to the bill, Munich, Germany’s own Sara Lugo (www.sara-lugo.com). As an internationally acclaimed soul/reggae singer who embodies all that is amazing about Norah Jones, fused with the reggae back beat of Bob Marley, her style is framed in a beautiful, memorable female voice and live performance. Grin said this year the festival is offering three days of music featuring Roots of Creation, Doctor Doom Orchestra and Alan Evans Trio and have added Silent Disco with Jeff Bujak late night. From rock to reggae, hip hop, jazz and soul to American pop –there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

“The Dark Knight Rises” will open in Norwalk in two places Friday — in the Aquarium’s IMAX® Theater as well as the Royale Theater on Westport Avenue.
Bow Tie Cinemas, the motion picture exhibitor in Southwestern Connecticut, has partnered with the aquarium to present Warner Brother’s upcoming hit on the big, big screen.
The engagement begins with a special midnight showing at 12:01 a.m. on July 20. Then two shows will be presented daily, at 7 and 10 p.m., in an engagement scheduled for five weeks.
“We are excited to debut ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on the giant IMAX® screen at The Maritime Aquarium to complement our regular engagement of the same film playing simultaneously on multiple screens at our Royale Theater on Westport Avenue,” said Ben Moss, owner of Bow Tie Cinemas.
“We will have a great selection of theater concessions available at the IMAX® Theater as well during the run,” Moss added.
“To see this movie on the aquarium’s six-story screen, via an IMAX® 70mm film projector, is the ultimate Batman experience,” said Chris Loynd, Maritime Aquarium marketing director. “IMAX® film offers detail, clarity and intensity, presented in giant, panoramic scenes. More than an hour of the film will expand to fill our entire giant screen. We are excited to be working with our South Norwalk neighbor Bow Tie Cinemas to offer this IMAX experience on opening day, July 20.”
Director Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX® cameras in a major motion-picture release in “The Dark Knight,” back in 2008. For “The Dark Knight Rises,” he upped the intensity, filming for more than an hour with the giant-format cameras, a new Hollywood record.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language. It’s two hours and 45 minutes long.

To ensure convenient access to beach facilities, the Norwalk Department of Recreation and Parks will initiate a new parking plan during the upcoming season. The plan will make certain that the Norwalk residents with seasonal passes to access Calf Pasture and Shady Beaches can proceed smoothly to parking facilities. It will also provide separate parking for out of town visitors to the beach.
On Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day weekend, out of town beachgoers will be directed to parking facilities at Taylor Farm. Those visitors will be directed to the Taylor Farm Parking Facilities after paying for their daily parking pass at the Main Gate left lane.
The plan will allow Norwalk residents with a summer beach pass to proceed more smoothly through the right lane to the Calf Pasture/Shady Beach parking facilities. Residents are reminded to have their annual parking pass in clear view on their dash board.
Residents and non-residents without beach passes are also reminded to follow all parking regulations. Notably, the Norwalk Police Department will be enforcing parking rules along Canfield Road, at Marvin School and the Canfield Parking area. To ensure safety and convenience for legally parked cars, those vehicles parked illegally will be ticketed and may be towed.

As part of a nationwide observance, Rex Marine Center is celebrating National Marina Day on June 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 144 Water St., Norwalk.
“National Marina Day is an annual celebration of the important role marinas play in waterfront communities all across America,” said Bill Gardella Jr., general manager of Rex. “Each day, this country’s marinas serve as safe, family-friendly gateways to boating and stewards of the environment. We hope you will visit Rex Marine Center, and enjoy the events we have planned.”
To observe this day and celebrate its 76th anniversary serving the boaters of Fairfield County, the staff at Rex Marine Center has planned an open house focusing on safety awareness, environmental responsibility, and seminars on engine maintenance, fiberglass repairs and varnishing techniques. There will also be kayak safety demonstrations, an in-house boat show featuring new and used boats, scuba diving information, and canvas information from the experts. Guests can also meet representatives from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Norwalk Seaport Association and the Harbor Watch Program.

Norwalk’s Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday. The parade marshals for this year’s parade will be veterans of the War in Iraq. The parade marshals will lead the parade starting at Veterans Memorial Park on Seaview Avenue and will step off promptly at 10 a.m.
The parade route is Fort Point Street, Van Zant Street then North on East Avenue from the East Norwalk Cemetary to the Town Green. The reviewing stand will be in front of the Norwalk Inn and Conference Center at 99 East Ave.
Among the bands participating are the Norwalk Fire Department Pipe Band, the Norwalk High School Marching Bears, the Brien McMahon High School Marching Senators, as well as bands from West Rocks, Roton, Ponus Ridge, and Nathan Hale Middle Schools.
A host of civic organizations, scout troops, youth athletic teams and community groups will also march. Prizes will be awarded for the best parade floats and presentations will be made at a reception at the American Legion immediately following the parade.

Norwalk’s Tree Advocate of the Year for 2012 is Don Nelson who has
earned a reputation as the Norwalk’s father of forestry management for
establishing the city as a national model for preserving its urban tree canopy.
The award is to be presented by the Norwalk Tree Alliance –co-founded by
Nelson in 1995—at the Norwalk Wilton Tree Festival May 19 in Cranbury Park.
Nelson’s commitment to tree-planting and conservation
over two decades has been influential in gaining recognition for Norwalk
for eight consecutive years as “Tree City USA,” a distinction the Arbor
Day Foundation has awarded to only 19 of Connecticut’s 169 municipalities
in 2012. For six successive years the honor has been augmented by the
foundation’s prestigious Growth Award.

The second of two permanent art installations at the South Norwalk train station sponsored by the Norwalk Parking Authority and the Norwalk Transit District will be installed in the next two weeks. The installation will take place between today and April 11 from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the tunnel connecting the eastbound and westbound sides of the station.
Norwalk native Duvian Montoya of Fairfield is creating “Silhouetted Faces and Period Pieces,” an exhibit of silhouetted figures that reflect the history of South Norwalk through fashion. Visitors will be encouraged to interact with generations from the 1860s to the present by scanning QR codes on the figures.
Montoya is a mixed media artist. His work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world. Duvian spearheaded a new art gallery and studio space in his hometown of Norwalk called SPAG (Saint Philip Artists’ Guild). He attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
Kathryn Hebert, director for the Parking Authority, says the exhibit is both beautiful and informative. “The space makes for a great gallery and this exhibit, part of the Norwalk Parking Authority’s ‘Art in Parking Places’ program, is an exciting way to bring art to life for the community.”
The first art project was installed in December in the eastbound lobby of the station. There, the team of David Boyajian of New Fairfield, Matt Rink of Redding and Vincent Appel of New York City crafted a series of sculptures that depict sites, history and culture of Norwalk such as an oyster boat, lighthouse, hat and hatbox. Funding for the two projects were made possible through a grant provided by the Federal Transportation Enhancement Public Art Program.
