On Saturday, I got to see the vast swallow roost at the mouth of the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook. It’s one of the great natural phenomenon in Connecticut.
Basically, every night, hundred of thousands of tree swallows return to the same small. reed-covered island to roost. It creates an amazing cloud of birds in the sky. To watch them fly in from all directions, gather into a giant flock, then fall from the sky into a giant swirl is astonishing.
While ornithologists know it happens, there’s a lot they don’t know about it. I’ll be writing more about this on Saturday on my Earth Matters column.
