Cmdr. Daniel Lombardo, a Danbury native, will be returning to Connecticut as he takes over as the USS Springfield’s commanding officer.

Lombardo graduated from Danbury High School in 1993, then attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

At a change-of-command ceremony aboard the Historic Ship Nautilus on Friday, it was announced that Lombardo will be relieving Cmdr. Christian Williams. He has experience on both attack submarines and ballistic-missile submarines.

For 17 years Lombardo has severed as a submarine officer aboard the USS Florida, USS Tuscon, and as executive officer aboard USS Alaska. Most recently, Lombardo served on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Navy.

Lombardo will be reporting to Groton to take command of Springfield, which has a 100 percent mission readiness grade while it was deployed in the Middle East last year, said the Navy.
