Tuesday’s with Randy

The UConn football team doesn’t have a “rivalry” with Rutgers.

OK then. Let’s talk about the game anyway:

– Tight end Yianni Apostolakos hurt his hip in practice last week and will be out for about eight weeks.

John Delahunt has moved up the depth chart and is now listed as the backup to Martin Bedard.

The Huskies were already without starter Steve Brouse.

“Losing Steve was tough,” coach Randy Edsall said. “He was a very good blocker and a very good short to intermediate pass receiver.”

This may mean we see more of tackle Dan Ryan as a tight end, right coach?

“I don’t know about that,” Edsall said with a smile.

Well, does a tight end have to be a pass threat to play in the UConn offense?

“Could be,” Edsall said.

OK, then is Ryan a viable threat?

“Yes he is,” Edsall said. “He can catch the ball.”

Finally a straight answer. Sort of.

– Like many UConn fans Edsall watched former Husky quarterback Dan Orlovsky’s first NFL start on Sunday. Like others, Edsall cringed when he saw Orlovsky step over the end line for a safety.

“He never did that while he was here. I just felt bad for him,” Edsall said.

“I texted him and told him not to let one play get his confidence down,” Edsall said. “I’m sure he’ll never do that again.”

– The Huskies will make a rare appearance on Saturday afternoon this week.

“I’m glad for a noon game finally,” Edsall said. “I don’t know if we’ll know how to play, because we’re not used to playing at noon.”

UConn has played five night games this season.

– Edsall thinks quarterback Zach Frazer will play better this week.

“I would expect him to be better in this game,” Edsall said. “He really has a game-and-a-half under his belt.”

What did Frazer work on most during the break? It should be obvious.

“I definitely need to eliminate the turnovers,” Frazer said. “It was my fault last game so I’m trying to eliminate that.”

– The bye week came at a perfect time for the Huskies, they insist.

“They were going since July 31,” Edsall said. “It was time for a break for a lot of reasons: for health reasons, for mental reasons.”

Defensive tackles Alex Polito and Kendall Reyes rested their ankles (they’re expected to play this week) and most of the other players took it easy, too.

“You get things corrected, you get people healthy, then you try to get the guys away from it so they can clear their minds,” Edsall said. “As they come back they’re a little more fresh, more eager to go. That’s been my approach.”

– He hasn’t played much recently but Edsall said he’s still counting on tailback Andre Dixon.

“Andre’s fine. Andre’s No. 2 this week. We hope to get him in there a little bit more,” Edsall said. “I’m not worried about Andre whatsoever.”

– The Huskies had hoped defensive end Mike Cox would be back on the practice field at this point, but it’s been a little slow going with his knee injury.

“I don’t know if we’ll see him back on the practice field for another couple of weeks,” Edsall said. “I don’t think that’s going to put him in the mix to go out and play (soon).”

– Rutgers QB Mike Teel has struggled, but so hasn’t the rest of his team.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said Tuesday he briefly considered benching Teel but decided it wasn’t in the best interest of anyone.

“I always consider everything. I’m not one to stick my head in the sand,” Schiano said. “It all boils down to me in the end. If I think someone else would give us a better chance to win then I’d play him.”

Schiano stuck with the senior, however, and it seems he’ll continue to do so.

“He’s our starter and I expect him to play well,” Schiano said.

Appealing issues

Nate Miles has filed an appeal with UConn, attempting to reverse a hearing officer’s decision to expel him from the school. The 6-foot-7 swingman was expelled last Thursday.

Miles’ advisor and former coach, Sean Patterson, said the appeal was delivered in time to meet the five-business day deadline.

“It’s been filed,” Patterson said Friday. “We’ve just done what’s required of us, to make sure the appeal is done in a timely fashion.”

Miles was arrested Sept. 22 on charges he violated a restraining order. He is due back in court Nov. 25.

Friendly skies, callous grounds

Remember all the praise I had for American Airlines the other day?

Well, I take it all back. I now officially hate them. (I’m a fickle guy, though, so we’ll probably make up next week).

With that rant out of the way, I’ll give you some nuggets from UConn’s 38-12 loss to North Carolina last night as I experience the third hour of my seven-hour stay in the Raleigh-Durham airport.

– Three blocked punts. Three blocked punts. See how they run. See how they run.

I’m still not sure how it all happened for the Huskies. Yes, Desi Cullen was a little slow. But apparently the Tar Heels saw something they could exploit.

Linebacker Bruce Carter was the star, getting a piece of three punts.

“UConn had a brand new personal protector…We felt like if we could kind of confuse him a bit with some of the alignments we could get some pressure off the edge,” Carolina coach Butch Davis said. “And it just worked. There wasn’t anything spectacular by scheme other than guys giving great effort and being at the right edges and getting off the ball.”

I’m planning to ask UConn coach Randy Edsall about this later in the day, but I assume the missing man on the punt team was tight end Steve Brouse. We’ll see.

– Tackle Dan Ryan wore a new number Saturday and played a new position. The Huskies used the 6-foot-8, 312-pound junior as a tight end and gave him No. 88 to wear.

In addition to adding another lineman, the Huskies used an unbalanced offensive line (moving linemen from side-to-side of the formation) a number of times against Carolina. It produced mixed results.

Ryan certainly blocked much better than the Huskies’ new starting tight end, Martin Bedard, but it’s unlikely he’ll get a pass thrown his way.

– Edsall on quarterback Zach Frazer’s first start:

“I think he did some good things,” Edsall said. “But you can’t throw three interceptions.”

Frazer on Frazer:

“We play as a team, win as a team and lose as a team,” Frazer said. “But I definitely could have done a lot better to help my team out.”

– One of the Huskies’ biggest problems was the penchant for penalties. They had only committed 20 penalties through their first five games but had 11 against Carolina.

“Eleven penalties, 97 yards? You’ve got to be kidding me,” Edsall said. “I think we had more penalties (Saturday) then we did the first five games.”

– Edsall apparently knew the Heels were good.

“This a top 25 team in my opinion,” Edsall said. “I ranked them in last week.”

More coming after the coach’s Sunday teleconference.

It’s ESPN’s world and we’re all just living in it

The lights are out at Kenan Stadium. They have been for about 12 minutes now.

Now comes word that the game will restart in another 15 or 20 minutes.

I can see. The players can see.

Let them play.

Oh, wait. We need good lighting for the TV folks.

Actually, there’s probably a safety concern here, too, by the officials. Blaming TV people is so much easier, though.

In-game update

Some observations from the first half:

Dan Ryan is a tight end?

He is tonight as the Huskies throw a No. 88 jersey on him and tell him to do some blocking.

– Someone may want to block North Carolina’s Bruce Carter on the next punt.

Just an idea.

Actually, Carolina ran a pretty good stunt on that THIRD punt block. Not sure what happened on the first two.

Donald Brown’s streak of gaining 100 yards in the first half of every game this season has ended. He’s got 63 yards on 15 carries at the break here.
