Wolverines!

Are you ready for the Wolverines?

No, not those Wolverines.

The students at UConn apparently are. There were already three tents set up outside Gampel Pavilion Friday afternoon with students getting in line for Saturday’s game.

A few notes from Friday:

– Michigan is 1-5 on the road (at Indiana). UConn is perfect at home this season and has lost four non-conference games total in Gampel Pavilion’s history (only two in the regular season).

Michigan’s playing OK. UConn’s playing out of this world.

“Even though they may be performing well, I could find reasons to be grumpy I suppose,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun cracked Friday. “I don’t find it hard to do that aspect of it.”

That being said, the game might be close.

John Beilein’s teams are different than most. It will be four or five-out on offense and probably a 1-3-1 zone defense.

“The greatest concern I think I have is them making a lot of three’s,” Calhoun said. “And then the pace and tempo of the game becomes critical.”

– F Jeff Adrien, with 14 more rebounds, will become just the fifth player in UConn history with at least 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Toby Kimball, Emeka Okafor, Art Quimby and Corny Thompson are the only ones who have done so far.

“It means a lot,” Adrien said. “Not too many people can say that.”

“I’m kind of speechless, to be mentioned with Emeka Okafor,” Adrien added.

– G Jerome Dyson missed was given the day off Wednesday to rest his injured body (knee, ankle, etc.). He practiced Friday, though, and should be ready to go Saturday.

Calhoun also said redshirting (well, it’s not red really, is it gray?) forward Ater Majok had an MRI on his knee to see if there was any problem. (It’s swelled).

Dr. Calhoun said he thinks it’s just swelled from over use.

– UConn didn’t take many 3-pointers (eight) against Louisville Monday.

“There’s a reason we didn’t take too many,” A.J. Price said. “We didn’t make any.”

Good point.

– Beilein has taken two teams into Gampel Pavilion before. His Richmond team lost to the Huskies on Nov. 19, 1998, and his West Virginia Mountaineers lost to UConn on Feb. 7, 2004.

“It’s not very friendly to opposing teams. Jim does a great job; George Blaney does a great job behind him,” Beilein said. “It’s an honor to go in there and play the number one team in the country, coached by a hall of famer.”

In both seasons UConn beat Beilein-coached teams in Gampel, the Huskies won the national championship.

Big East bites

A couple of nuggets from this morning’s Big East conference call:

– UConn coach Jim Calhoun is still basking in his team’s dominant win Monday night over Louisville.

“The Louisville game was pretty special for us,” Calhoun said.

“Defensively and attacking pressure, it was maybe our best game of the year,” the coach continued. “It wasn’t the best game we’ve ever played but it was the best game of the year.”

– Plenty of questions for Calhoun about being No. 1. Calhoun has plenty of experience coaching a top-ranked team, and experience tells him it won’t always last.

“This team has hopefully so far been somewhat oblivious to it,” Calhoun said. “Maybe we’ll even take it, to the point where we want to stay up there and be considered the best team.”

For his part, Calhoun isn’t choosing among the nation’s best yet.

“There is no single best team in the country, in my opinion. There’s a number of really great teams,” Calhoun said. “Don’t forget about Carolina, please. Don’t forget about some of the great teams out there, Oklahoma. There’s a whole bunch.”

– Marquette remains the league’s only unbeaten. The Golden Eagles’ 9-0 start is already tied for the fifth-best start in Big East history. Their 20-2 overall start is the team’s best since it began the 1977-78 season 22-2.

Marquette hasn’t played the meatiest of league schedules (yet) but coach Buzz Williams isn’t about to apologize for it.

“We’ve played the schedule that the Big East gave us,” Williams said. “Whether that pales in comparison to others, how it stacks up? I don’t know.”

Marquette is at USF Friday, the second of three-straight road games for the league’s top team.

“This is an important stretch for us, with three games on the road,” Williams said.

– DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright on his team’s game Saturday against Pittsburgh:

“It’s another Big East day where you’re going to play one of the best teams in the country,” Wainwright said.

Ouch. He’s right though, and Wainwright’s Blue Demons (0-10) have paid for the league’s strength more than anyone else so far this season.

– USF is in a similar spot. Coach Stan Heath’s Bulls have only two wins in the league (both over DePaul) and although they’re maybe not a bad team, they have a bad league record.

“It’s a war,” Heath said. “We’ve told our guys it’s a part of history. Embrace it and let’s do the best we can do in it.”

“You have to keep the glass half full,” Heath said, “because this league can beat you up.”

More FB class info

Back from Rentschler Field and it’s snow-covered yard lines and parking lots. A few notes on the UConn football team’s newest class:

– WR Dwayne Difton is probably the jewel of the class. He’s the first four-star recruit (according to rivals) to join the Huskies from high school. Jarrell Miller came to UConn after UNC and a prep school.

“He’s fast, he’s quick,” Edsall said. “He’s maybe not as big as some of the other guys but he’s a guy who can make plays.”

– The coaches seem to like LB Mike Osiecki. The son of Sandy (Ansonia/Arizona State/Kansas City Chiefs) and the brother of Ryan (Seymour/Louisville/UNH), Mike Osiecki will probably make a name for himself at UConn.

“He’s a guy that epitomizes the word football player,” Edsall said.

“He’s one of those tough Valley kids,” Edsall said. “We got Erik Kuraczea out of the Valley last year. We got Mike this year. We’re hoping there’s guys there every year.”

– Edsall said Greg Robinson will move from OLB to MLB. There’s more chance that he’ll unseat Greg Lloyd Jr. than Scott Lutrus, I guess.

– QB Leon Kinnard will remain at that position as long the 5-foot-9 Baltimore native wants to.

“Leon’s a QB until he comes and tells me he doesn’t want to be a QB,” Edsall said.

– RB Martin Hyppolite reminds Edsall in some ways of Donald Brown.

“He reminds me of the guy that’s just leaving with his balance and lower body strength,” Edsall said.

– DE Trevardo Williams (a guy I saw run track plenty of times in high school, by the way…FAST) is perhaps the most ready to play of the freshmen (other than probably WR Dwayne Difton).

“He’s already a lot bigger and stronger than he was a year ago at this time,” Edsall said. “That extra time at the prep school has really helped him develop.”

Williams is already enrolled at UConn and will participate in spring practice. Keensen Chambers (K.C., I think, he’ll be known as) and Jesse Joseph are on campus too, though Chambers has an injured wrist and may not play in the spring.

– Edsall wants every great state player to stay home, obviously. Jordan Reed (Florida), Jake Golilc (Notre Dame) and Mark Harrison (Rutgers) didn’t choose UConn but the Huskies did OK at keeping talent home.

Marcus Aiken (St. Paul-Bristol), Mike Osiecki (Seymour) and Williams are obviously good gets.

“Kids now understand that they can flourish here, in-state kids especially,” Edsall said. “If they haven’t seen it, they’re missing the boat.

“You can be an All-American here because it’s been done,” Edsall continued. “You can be a Rhodes Scholar candidate, it’s been done. You can win a Big East championship here, it’s been done. You can get to the NFL from here, it can get done.”

New prices for FB season tix

Season tickets for the UConn football team are on sale and the school has changed the prices (slashing some donation requirements) and adding a few more options.

If you sign on (usually a three-year commitment) by April 30 you’ll get 2008 prices.

“We understand the economic environment. We know what all of us are feeling, whether it’s at home or in our respective businesses,” UConn AD Jeff Hathaway said Tuesday afternoon. “We’re very cognizant of the economy.”

The 2009 ticket prices will go up slightly. If the building isn’t sold out and single-game tickets are available, they will cost $30, not the $25 that they did in 2008.

The school’s goal is to sell out Rentschler Field for the upcoming year with season tickets. That means it will have to sell about 34,000 season tickets. The other 6,000 go to the visiting team and for other pre-existing commitments.

The smarest move on UConn’s part appears to be making its chairback section into three different sections. It’s unfair for someone in the front row to pay the same ammount as someone in the last row on the same yard line. Good move.

The “preferred” and “reserved” seats, those for the common folks, will cost the same ammount as last season _ $150 for a seat for six games _ if you lock in now.

A few other points from the AD:

– Will there be any change in the prices for basketball tickets?

“No. We’ve not had those conversations,” Hathaway said.

– Will Rentschler Field expand?

“There are no immediate plans for stadium expansion,” said Hathaway, noting that a state building has little chance of getting such funding in the current economy.

– Is trying to take away single-game and small package options the right move?

“If you can’t get a ticket for an event, it was a greater perceived value,” Hathaway said.

– Hathaway encouraged swift decisions by fans. Seats will begin being assigned in May so those who want them are encourage to “get in line.”

– The Notre Dame series won’t affect Rentschler (sort of). Hathaway said there will always be at least six games at Rentschler a season, including the ones that inlclude “home games” with the Irish in Boston (Foxboro) or New York (Meadowlands).

Hathaway said there may even be a case where UConn plays seven home games at Rentschler PLUS a home game with Notre Dame.

I’m not sure about the math on that one, but if he’s right that’s a pretty good deal.

Roasted Friars

A little late-night blogging for all of you still upright (myself, I took a detour after the game and neglected by blogging duties until now:

– In case you missed it, UConn beat the living snot out of Providence Saturday afternoon 94-61. The Huskies were up 37 late in the game before “settling” for a 33-point romp.

“This was definitely payback,” Jeff Adrien said. “That’s how we see it.”

UConn had lost three straight to PC and Adrien and Craig Austrie were the only Huskies to experience such a victory.

“It was very important. They’ve had our number recently,” A.J. Price, who had a game-high 19 points.

Hasheem Thabeet was a defensive monster, perhaps more than usual. He tied his own school record (Emeka Okafor and Donyell Marshall did it, too) with 10 blocked shots.

“They kept coming and I kept telling them ‘No. You’re not going to get easy shots today,’ ” Thabeet said. “They kept coming and I kept blocking them.”

Thabeet also had 15 points and 11 rebounds, picking up just the seventh triple-double in UConn history. It was also the 13th triple-double in a Big East game ever.

– Coach Jim Calhoun couldn’t find much to complain about. Even the points he tried to make with the officials were rendered moot.

Price’s back-pedaling 3-pointer that started a 20-0 run in the second half was just one example.

“When I shot it coach got up and yelled ‘He got hit!’ ” Price said. “I just yelled back to him ‘It doesn’t matter, coach. It doesn’t matter.’ That’s how I was feeling at that point. We were riding a wave and we were determined not to let this game get out of hand.”

Stanley Robinson broke out for 18 points, more than he scored in his previous six games combined.

Calhoun said “welcome back” to Stanley as he exited late in the game. Robinson didn’t know what to say back.

“I don’t know,” Robinson said. “Coach said ‘Welcome back’ and I just said ‘Thank you.’ ”

– Saturday’s game in all probability puts UConn at No. 1 in the nation. It would be the Huskies first trip to the top since March 2006.

“It’s been a bumpy ride, you know,” Adrien said. “We’ve been through thick and thin. That shows we’ve fought our way back to the top. We’ve been through a lot with this team: guys getting suspended, injuries, guys not having great games, whatever it is.

“It’s great to finally get to the point where we can say we’re No. 1,” Adrien said.

– The win over Providence also served as another milestone for Adrien. He’s been keeping a list of all the teams that beat the Huskies in Adrien’s sophomore season (2006-07) and he’s checking them off one by one as UConn gets a little revenge.

“The only team we haven’t paid back yet is Georgetown,” Adrien said.

– Price joined the 1,000-point club at UConn with a 3-pointer midway through the first half.

“I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs here,” said Price, who has now scored 1,015 points. “To still score 1,000 points says something about me as a person and as a player.”

He’s the 42nd member of that elite group of Huskies, following right behind teammate Jerome Dyson.
