Charges against Miles dropped (nolled)

Nate Miles, the former UConn basketball player who never actually saw action for the Huskies but who remains a memorable student-athlete, will not be prosecuted for violating a restraining order.

That charge, along with three counts of disorderly conduct, were nolled (not prosecuted or dropped) by the state. Miles’ attorney Rob Britt appeared in Rockville Superior Court Tuesday morning though Miles did not.

Because of Miles’ compliance with the court’s order to undergo counseling, the case was not prosecuted.

Football depth chart

UConn FB coach Randy Edsall announced his two-deep Tuesday heading out of spring practice.

“This is where we are after spring ball and headed into summer workouts and preseason camp,” Edsall said in a statement. “Some positions need to be solidified and there can be changes made to this before we have a gameday depth chart for our opener against Ohio University on September 5.

“Zach Frazer is our number one quarterback coming out of spring practice and he has earned that spot. However, as we continue over the summer and into fall camp, there is still competition at that position, like there is at each spot on the team.”

Donald Brown a Colt

Is it me or did NFL commissioner Roger Goodell have a little questionable inflection when he announced Donald Brown’s selection Saturday?

It was almost like “the Indianapolis Colts select: Donald Brown, running back….Connecticut?”

Yes, you can believe it Mr. Commish. UConn has made it to the first round of the NFL Draft. There are probably plenty more people who share your disbelief, though.

As for his selection, Brown was obviously pleased.

“It still hasn’t hit me yet,” he said Saturday night. “I’m still pinching myself to see if it’s real.”

As for the Colts, Brown had no idea they were interested.

“At the combine I met with their sports psychologist and that’s the last I heard from them,” Brown said.

Lutrus arrested

Linebacker Scott Lutrus was arrested Thursday night after a fight during UConn’s annual Spring Weekend.

The Brookfield native, a junior who was recently named a captain for the upcoming season, was charged with interfering with police.

UConn police said Lutrus and his brother were involved in a fight at Celeron Square apartments, a complex just off the Storrs campus.

Majok entering draft

This one’s not out of left field but it’s certainly left-center, right?

Ater Majok, the UConn freshman who was to make his debut with the Huskies in the upcoming season, will instead enter the NBA Draft. Majok will not hire an agent, however, and could pull his name out before the June 25 draft.

“After meeting with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to enter the NBA Draft,” Majok said in a statement. “I feel it will help me to test the process and get feedback on my strengths and weaknesses. It will allow me to get a better idea of what areas in my game need improvement and make me a better player in the future. I will not be hiring an agent and I enter this process with the full intention of assessing my abilities and returning to Connecticut in 2009-10.”

Majok is throwing his name into the mix partly because of the NCAA rule change that will go into effect next season.

“In view of the upcoming rule changes for underclassmen, this is an opportunity for Ater to see where he currently fits into what I believe will be a future in professional basketball,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. “I respect that Ater understands that this decision is about more than just him and that he has, and will continue to, involve his immediate family in this process as it goes forward.”

UConn-Kentucky set

UConn’s game with Kentucky at Madison Square Garden is now set.

The Huskies and Wildcats will meet Dec. 9 in the city as part of the SEC/Big East Invitational.

St. John’s and Georgia will play in the first game of what will be a doubleheader at MSG.

“We are excited to be a part of this and to have the opportunity to play a program like Kentucky,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said in a statement. “We always try to schedule against the best and think this is a continuation of that tradition for us. In addition, it is always exciting for our team and our fans to play in Madison Square Garden, an arena that has been the site of so many successes for us over the years.”

UConn and Calhoun have won seven championships at MSG _ the 1988 NIT championship and the 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2004 Big East tournament championships. Under coach Calhoun, UConn is 44-29 at MSG; 8-7 in 15 regular season games against St. John’s University, 28-17 in Big East tournament games and 8-5 in other tournament play in MSG. Connecticut had a record of 6-15 in Madison Square Garden prior to Calhoun’s arrival at UConn.

On Dec. 10 at St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., DePaul will take on Mississippi State on ESPN2, followed by Syracuse vs. Florida on ESPN. Game times for all four matchups will be announced at a later date.

UConn beat Kentucky in those teams’ only meeting in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament in Philadelphia.

Tickets for the 2009 SEC/Big East Invitational are expected to go on sale in early summer. For more information, visit the official web site: secbigeastinvitational.com.

Some numbers

There’s still time on the clock but here are some final stats from the Blue-White affair.

Zach Frazer: 13-of-22 for 115 yards and a TD

Cody Endres: 9-of-19 for 68 yards and no TDs

Jordan Todman: 9 rushes, 65 yards

Andre Dixon: 9 rushes, 42 yards

Marcus Easley: 10 catches, 169 yards and two TDs

– The offense is going to win, based on the scoring system. But it’s clear the defense (first team, anyway) is ahead at this point. CB Jasper Howard, LB Scott Lutrus, DE Lindsey Witten and DT Twyon Martin all have looked good at times.
