Endres to start at QB, Lutrus may sit again

A rather testy Randy Edsall made one thing clear during his Sunday chat with reporters: Cody Endres will start at quarterback this week against Pittsburgh.

Zach Frazer is questionable for the game _ a 50 percent chance of playing, by UConn’s math _ and returned to practice with the Huskies Sunday afternoon. His injured right knee has healed to the point where he may be able to return soon.

TE Ryan Griffin (back) is in a similar situation. He also is questionable.

“They’re going to practice today (Sunday). We’re going to work them in with the 2’s and see what happens and how they progress,” Edsall said. “Neither of them practiced at all last week.”

When asked again, Edsall made it clear that he’s ruled Frazer out as a starter this week.

“Cody Endres is the starting quarterback,” Edsall said. “What else do I have to say?”

“The guy (Frazer) hasn’t taken a freakin’ snap yet,” Edsall said. “No, there’s no way that he’s going to be the starting quarterback this week.”

When Edsall first said Sunday afternoon that Endres was his starter, it sounded as if he was saying that Frazer would have to “re-compete” for his job back. But later it appears the coach just seems to have put Frazer on the back burner and isn’t even considering his place in the pecking order.

“There’s no quarterback controversy. There’s nothing there,” Edsall said.

As for Frazer: “I’m hoping to see if he’s got a chance to maybe be backup quarterback this week,” Edsall said.

– LB Scott Lutrus will have his injured shoulder examined again Tuesday.

“He’s got a test on Tuesday that they’re going to do with the nerve,” Edsall said.

The Brookfield native is listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game against Pitt “even though they (UConn’s medical staff) said he does look a little bit better,” Edsall said.

Lutrus had not been involved in any contact drills since injuring the shoulder in Week 1 against Ohio.

“He’s practiced a little bit in a red jersey but hasn’t had any contact,” Edsall said.

– As expected, RB Meme Wylie and LB/S Kijuan Dabney are out. Both suffered season-ending injuries recently.

Dabney will have surgery on Wednesday to repair his shoulder.

Kanuch semifinalist for Campbell (Draddy) Trophy

DALLAS — University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Brad Kanuch is a semifinalist for the 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy (formerly known as the Draddy Trophy).

Semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have “outstanding football ability” as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated “strong leadership and citizenship.”

Renamed this fall in honor of Bill Campbell, the chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF’s Gold Medal, the award comes with a 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Kanuch is a social science/sport and leisure major and carries an overall grade point average of 3.676 on a 4.0 scale. He has been a Dean’s List selection at UConn and has also earned Academic All-Big East honors.

Kanuch has nine receptions this year for 133 yards with one touchdown. In his career, he has 56 receptions and three TDs.

He has been active in a number of community service programs, including the “Goal Line Project” where UConn football players make weekly visits to the children of the East Hartford Middle School.

The finalists will be announced Oct. 29.
