Some quick updates from UConn football coach Randy Edsall’s Tuesday morning chat with the media:
– Johnny McEntee, a redshirt freshman from Fullerton, Calif., is your No. 2 quarterback.
With Cody Endres out for the year and Zach Frazer at the top of the depth chart, the Huskies will turn to McEntee if anything happens to Frazer. Michael Box’s redshirt will be preserved.
Box is “A freshman who we think is a talented young man” according to Edsall and the Huskies don’t want him starting his career in the ninth game of his first season.
Casey Turner is No. 3 on the depth chart.
Edsall said he expects Frazer to improve on his performance in the Rutgers game.
“I think he’ll go out and play well this week,” Edsall said.
– RB/KR Robbie Frey had surgery on his shoulder Tuesday morning.
– Jerome Junior is the starter at strong safety again. Edsall said we’ll see him in there in nickel situations, too.
“We feel he’s got an opportunity to be a really good safety for us,” Edsall said.
– True freshman Mike Lang is taking Robbie Frey’s place on kickoff return. Lang and Jordan Todman will be back there for now.
– Even though it looks like Tony Pike has a chance to come back this week, Edsall expects to see Cincinnati’s No. 2 QB again.
“I think we’re probably going to see Zach Collaros. I’d be surprised if Tony Pike plays,” Edsall said.
– The fact that ABC and its No. 1 broadcast team will be in the house doesn’t mean much on the field, but it’s good for the UConn program, Edsall said.
“I think the exposure is tremendous. You can’t be the exposure,” Edsall said. “It’s pretty good for the program.”
– UConn is 1-4 against Cincinnati and 0-3 at Nippert Stadium. But, we all know, the Huskies pounded Cincy 40-16 in East Hartford last season to hand the Bearcats their only league defeat.
– The Huskies are big underdogs but that’s not an issue for Edsall.
“We’re good enough to beat any team on our schedule … We’re going to be good enough to beat anybody left on our schedule,” Edsall said.
– The coach on true freshman DE Jesse Joseph:
“If he can stay healthy…I really believe that he’s got a chance to be a really good player for us,” Edsall said.
