A few items from UConn football coach Randy Edsall Thursday afternoon. Nothing major:
– The injury list is notable for who is not on it.
LB Scott Lutrus isn’t probable, questionable, doubtful or anything. He’s just playing. How novel.
LB Sio Moore (hamstring) is out, RB Meme Wylie (arm) is out, DE A.J. Portee (sickness) is questionable, QB Cody Endres (shoulder) is out, RB/KR Robbie Frey (shoulder) is out.
DE Mike Cox (leg) and WR Alex Molina (neck) are ready to go, according to the head coach.
– You might be able to make the argument (you’d be wrong, but you can at least make the argument) that UConn lost more when Frey went down Saturday than it did when Endres was hurt.
Frey was a special teams superstar this year.
“He did a great job for us as a wide guy on punts, he went down a made a lot of tackles,” Edsall said. “On punt return he was a guy who would hold people up. We used him for a lot of different things in terms of punt return. And then on kickoff coverage he was a safety for us.
“There’s a guy who has really made a name for himself as a special teams guy. Now there’s not one guy that’s replacing him, it’s taking more than one guy to replace him in all those situations. We lost quite a lot when we lost Robbie.”
– Endres and Frey won’t travel this weekend to Cincinnati as they recover from surgery. Both will go with the Huskies to Notre Dame in two weeks when UConn hits the road again.
– Your scout team players of the week? QB Mike Box (offense), CB Tevrin Brandon (defense), LB Jimmy Healy (special teams)
– DT Ryan Wirth, a redshirt freshman from Medford, N.J., saw a couple plays of action last week against Rutgers.
“He’s a guy we thought might be able to contribute on third downs and in the pass rush situations,” Edsall said.
– QB Zach Frazer had a good week of practice, the coach says.
“Zach is prepared to go and play,” Edsall said. “The biggest thing with Zach, just like any quarterback, is to take what’s there and don’t feel like you have to make everything happen. Just take what the defense gives you.”
– OK, barring something really strange, QB Johnny McEntee isn’t going to play.
But….if something happens Edsall says he feels comfortable with the redshirt freshman from Fullerton, Calif.
“He’s an accurate quarterback throwing the ball. He’s got some athletic ability,” Edsall said. “He does understand the game. If he has to go in, he’ll go in and do what we ask him to do.”
