Cincinnati 47, UConn 45
Take that score in for a minute.
I’m not sure coach Randy Edsall believed it. He did a double-take of the scoreboard when he emerged from the locker room after the game to speak to the media.
You thought UConn was out of it, didn’t you?
Well, maybe they were and maybe they weren’t.
In the end it’s just another tough loss for the Huskies, who have now lost five games by a total of 15 points.
Is there an award for the best 4-5 team in the nation? It’s not one you want to win but the Huskies are a shoo-in.
“It seems like the same old story in terms of the five losses we’ve had,” Edsall said. “I’m running out of things to tell them after games like this.”
– UConn RB Jordan Todman was terrific. He ran 26 times for 162 yards and scored four touchdowns. He, of course, took little solace in his individual efforts.
“It never gets easier to take. It’s frustrating losing,” Todman said. “We’re all competitors and we come out here every game hoping to win and playing to win.”
– UConn is off this week. Forget the usual ‘we love to play ever week’ bull-$#@&%.’ The coach knows after the Jasper Howard stuff and the painful losses it’s time to rest.
“We need the bye very badly,” Edsall said. “We need these kids to get away from football.”
– So how did the Huskies come back despite being down 20? What was the key?
“Reggie’s punt return, definitely. But we just took one play at a time,” UConn QB Zach Frazer said. “We knew what we could do. We knew we had it in ourselves as an offensive unit. We wanted to play within the system.”
– The Huskies kind of came out trying not to lose. That turned into losing big quickly.
“I told them going into the game ‘Play loose. Let it fly. Don’t worry about making a mistake or worry about things,’ ” Edsall said. “I think some guys might have been a little bit tight.”
– Cincinnati, as you probably know by now, racked up 711 total yards.
It was a Cincy school record but not the most ever against UConn (shocking, I know).
Delaware had 732 against the Huskies on Nov. 7, 1998 in a 59-17 romp.
– Cincinnati QB Zach Collaros had 480 yards passing.
The record for a QB against UConn? That would belong to Rhody’s Tom Erhardt, who had 566 in a 56-42 URI win on Nov. 16, 1985.
– What is the NCAA record for most receiving yards in a game without scoring a touchdown?
I don’t know but I’d be willing to bet Mardy Gilyard set it Saturday. Gilyard caught 12 passes for 172 yards but somehow failed to make it into the end zone. Good defense, I guess.

I can’t remember a season like this and I sympathize with Edsall, what can you tell your team week after week of gut-wrenching losses. Although excruciating, UConn football is must watch tv, they always put on a show.

Maybe the must-see-TV factor will get the Huskies a bowl game if they finish 6-6. We’ll see.
