Spent a few minutes on the phone with UConn football coach Randy Edsall (along with the usual suspects) Sunday afternoon.
The coach, who was getting ready to leave on a recruiting trip, sounded quite tired. Yes, he probably didn’t get back home until nearly 5 a.m. Sunday morning after Saturday’s late-night affair but it’s a safe bet the season is wearing on Edsall a bit, too.
– Edsall didn’t see gain much more insight into Saturday’s game after watching the film of it. He saw most of it live.
“Defensively, it wasn’t a very good effort,” Edsall said.
There certainly were a few positives, though.
“We had the ability to get into a high-scoring game and hang in there and do some things,” Edsall said.
– UConn will host a “Celebration of the Life of Jasper Howard” Thursday night at Jorgensen Auditorium on the Storrs campus. The event begins at 7 p.m.
– The coaches will be busy recruiting but the Husky players will get some much-needed time off this week.
There was no practice Sunday and there won’t be on Monday or Tuesday, either. The Huskies will get back to the practice field on Wednesday.
– FS Robbie Vaughn (big toe), RB Andre Dixon (lower leg), C Moe Petrus (ankle), DE Trevardo Williams (ankle) and CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (ankle) all sustained minor injuries.
None of them appear likely to miss the Notre Dame game in two weeks.
“I think they all should be fine by next Sunday when we get ready to go,” Edsall said.
– DE Lindsey Witten has some good numbers this season but most of them were posted early. The senior hasn’t played great in league play yet.
“He needs to step it up. There’s no question about that,” Edsall said. “He hasn’t been as productive as he was earlier in the year.”
– Middle linebacker Greg Lloyd’s move down to defensive tackle in certain passing situations was a new twist to UConn’s defense Saturday night.
The move didn’t exactly produce huge plays but it’s a look the Huskies might continue to use.
“We’ll evalutate that,” Edsall said. “It’s about trying to get our best people on the field. I thought Greg did some good things in there.”
– Cincinnati’s 711 yards of total offense Saturday represent the second-best total in Big East history. Louisville gained 729 in a win over Middle Tennessee State in 2007.
– Cincinnati QB Zach Collaros’ 555 total yards did set a new league record. Collaros threw for 480 and ran for 75. (Take a wild guess at who might be named Big East offensive player of the week Monday morning.)
– A note from the UConn side of the record book: The 45 points the Huskies scored tied the school record for most points in a loss. UConn lost to Villanova in triple overtime 48-45 back in 1999.
