The injuries are starting to mount nearly as fast as the losses for the UConn football team. Here’s some info from coach Randy Edsall’s chat with reporters Sunday:
– QB Cody Endres, as expected, had surgery for a separated shoulder Sunday morning and is done for the season.
“He had surgery today that went well,” Edsall said.
– RB/KR Robbie Frey also has a shoulder injury. Although there is no surgery scheduled for Frey’s shoulder now, it’s probably in his future.
“At some point it’s going to be surgery,” Edsall said. “He does have a labrum tear and there are some other things going on.”
Frey too won’t play in the team’s final four games.
“He won’t play the rest of the year,” Edsall said.
– Other injuries: DE Mike Cox (lower leg) is probable, WR Alex Molina (neck) is probable, LB Sio Moore (hamstring) is questionable, RB Meme Wylie (arm) is probable.
– Zach Frazer is now the starting quarterback, and Edsall hopes his junior is a little more consistent as the season progresses.
“He was inconsistent there to start,” Edsall said as he evaluated Frazer’s play against Rutgers. “I thought he made some reads that he shouldn’t have made. Then again he came back and did a good job of taking the team down. He finished the game up strong. Now he’s going to have to be the guy.”
Frazer threw interceptions but also threw for more than 300 yards.
“His biggest problem is when he gets outside of what the defense gives him,” Edsall said. “That’s when he gets in trouble.”
– He made no official announcements on Sunday but Edsall seemed to indicate that true freshman Mike Box would not see the field this season, thereby preserving his redshirt.
When Frazer was hurt earlier this season and Endres was forced into duty, the coach said he wouldn’t hesitate to play Box if need be. Edsall was asked if that was the case now.
“No. We’ll get into that on Tuesday,” Edsall said. “That’s something the coaching staff and I are…we’re going to meet here later in the day to determine what the two-deep will before this week.”
– Edsall had a chance to look at left tackle Mike Ryan’s two-point conversion play on tape. The coach wasn’t nearly as heated Sunday as he was on the sidelines Saturday but still seemed to think his team got a raw deal.
“I didn’t think there was conclusive evidence from what I saw, in my opinon,” Edsall said.
