Aiken, Generett out for 2010

UConn football coach Randy Edsall spent a few minutes with the media Thursday to discuss some offseason issues. Here are the highlights:

– Redshirt freshman S/WR Marcus Aiken has been dismissed from the school for what Edsall called “university policies.”

It appears that Aiken’s academics weren’t up to par, though Edsall wouldn’t confirm the specifics.

Edsall did say that players in Aiken’s situation have returned to the team in the past. It appeared he was referring to players like Dahna Deleston and Marcus Campbell.

“They have the ability to rectify that situation. Marcus is planning to do that. He would like to be back here at the university,” Edsall said.

– WR Malik Generett, another redshirt freshman, will be ineligible to play this fall, Edsall said.

The coach said Generett did not meet “NCAA standards” in a certain category (again, sounds like academics) but will remain in school.

– DE Greg Lloyd (knee) could be ready when the Huskies open training camp Aug. 9.

“A lot will depend on how hard Greg wants to work in the next month,” Edsall said. “If he works real hard, he should be OK to get started.”

The coach isn’t too worried about depth if Lloyd is forced to redshirt.

“If Greg’s there, he’s there. If he’s not, I’m not concerned about it,” Edsall said.

– OT Jimmy Bennett (knee) will be “full go” when camp begins.

DE Jesse Joseph (shoulder), CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (shoulder) and WR Nick Williams (hip) will also be ready play full speed when camp opens.

– DT Alex Polito (shoulder) “should be” cleared to participate toward the end of camp, Edsall said.

– LB Emmanuel Omokaro (knee) is on track to play in late September, the coach reports.

– The football team’s incoming freshman reported on Sunday and started classes Monday.

– Freshman WR Geremy Davis may have surgery on his knee. The Lawrenceville, Ga., injured the knee before arriving at UConn.

– The team will have three practices open to the public this August during training camp.

They are: Friday, Aug. 13 at 3:15 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 19 at 8:10 a.m.; and Tuesday Aug. 24 at 9:10 a.m.

– In a fashion note, Edsall reports that DT Twyon Martin has cut his dreadlocks.

No word yet if that has sapped the 280-pound junior’s strength.

  1. Twyon’s dreads were gone at the spring game.

  2. I must admit I didn’t notice. Oh well, I’ll try and stay on top of these things.
