Tight end Ryan Griffin is probable for Saturday’s opener against Michigan with a leg injury. - Neill UConn given the weekend by NCAAJust got a press release from UConn. The school announced that the NCAA Committee on Infractions has granted a second extension for UConn to file its response in the Nate Miles/Josh Nochimson matter. The original due date for UConn’s report was Aug. 20. An initial extension pushed that back to Sept. 3. Now the school, and all the parties accused (Jim Calhoun, Pat Sellers, Beau Archibald, etc.) have until Sept. 7 (Tuesday) to respond. Although Tuesday is the date the documents must be filed, it seems the public may have to wait a while to review. UConn cited state laws and university guidelines, insisting the documents must be reviewed before being released to the media or public. At some point in the future, UConn officials say, the information will be released and a press conference scheduled. - Neill Update from EdsallWe spent a few minutes on the phone with UConn coach Randy Edsall this afternoon as his Huskies prepare for Michigan. Here’s the skinny: – No talk of injuries at all. Edsall won’t talk about injuries at all during the week, it seems. Look for the Huskies’ injury report, however, to come out around 6 o’clock. – In general, Edsall said he’s been pleased with the team’s effort in practice. “For an opening week’s practices things have been good,” Edsall said. “They guys are ready to go play.” – The rotation at tailback _ i.e. whether Robbie Frey or D.J. Shoemate is the REAL number two _ is still unknown. Jordan Todman is number one. Beyond that… “In our minds we do have a plan in place in terms of how we want to utilize Robbie and D.J,” Edsall said. “Sometimes situations during the game will dictate that.” – Edsall said six true freshman have made the travel squad this week. Three are in the two-deep: CB Gilbert Stlouis, CB Taylor Mack and WR Leon Kinnard. Three others will make the trip to Ann Arbor this week with the rest of the team (2 p.m. flight out of Bradley, FYI): LB Yawin Smallwood, S Byron Jones and FB Reuben Frank. Now, that doesn’t mean any of the latter three will play. Nor does it mean they’ll travel every week. Smallwood, Jones and Frank remain redshirt candidates. – The Scout Team players of the week are: RB Jonathan Jean-Louis (offense), LB Yawin Smallwood (defense) and LB Brandon Steg (special teams). – That’s it folks. Remember to come back for our live chat at 3 p.m.! - Neill |
